The adverts say that they protect your forks from damage, is this true? Do they need protecting? Lizard skin seem to be the product.

Don't bother as they're a waste of cash. They don't protect your forks in wet weather at all. In fact in really muddy conditions they do a good job of trapping dirt against the stantions and encouraging scratches.

Seconded, they used to be called Fork Gators and looked like they protected crap from damaging the fork material by keeping grit out of the moving parts, a la motorcross bikes. In fact all they do is hide any dirtgrit allowing it to grind away at the material and you never notice the dirt build up underneath, so it never gets cleaned off.

Steer clear, more a fashion statement than a practical solution.

They also mean that you forget to roll them back and clean underneath, which leads to an unpleasant build up and corrosion
