Very nice swallowtail there - well captured. I often see them when in France and admire their powerful, stately flight.

And back here in Britain it's shaping up to be a bumper butterfly year - for the commoner species at least (you'd be very lucky to see a Swallowtail though)! The number of Painted Ladies on the wing this year has been phenomenal: we must have seen thousands on a short walk on the South Downs yesterday; and other species are also doing well. Cameras ready!

Thank you for you for all your comments.Yes it was taken by me a couple of weeks ago in the foot hills of the Pyrenees.The village was called Rennes-les-Bains.

One can't tell. The male and female of this species (Papilio machaon) are virtually indistinguishable - unless you happen to be another Swallowtail yourself of course (or unless you're lucky enough to see one laying eggs).
