There's a lot of snobbery about coffee. It's a bit like real ale bores going on about Badgers Pish being the only beer worth drinking.

I've loved drinking coffee since I was a kid in the local Italian cafes before it was called Cappucino and we used to ask for frothy coffees. Without all these big sellers popularising coffee there wouldn't be the demand for small "artisan" coffee shops.

I make my own espressos at home but also like being able to get a reasonably decent coffee in the high street. I have my own preferences, and Barstucks is not one of them, but that's like everything else in life. I'm just happy to have choices.

If you're in South Wales or the South West try the Coffee No. 1 chain. Was private but now owned by Brains Breweries and the quality is still as good.
I like Coffee No 1, I've never seen the appeal in Starbucks or Costa, in fact I doubt I've had more than a handful from either, just when they are they only option. Much prefer the independent shops for the variety of cakes and different atmosphere in each

Most of the independent coffee shops in my Fine City use the same batch of espresso coffee and it is acrid and rank. By happy coincidence, the best espresso is made by a bike shop/cafe,<insert plug, no personal connection> dandyhorse, which I'm pretty sure is not a covert branch of Tescos

Rapha's coffee is amongst the most disgusting I've had. Not helped by the blue paper towel floating around in the bottom. They seemed surprised that I was displeased by that addition!!

Fake aged armchairs, fake old pictures, fake aged brand new floor boards, topped off with a picture of a scrotum on the frothy head of your coffee. Its all so cringingly artificial.
Nothing fake there, those are sourced from all over the world( a mate of mine helped to build the place). That's a nice creama top on the espresso it was a heart, before I turned it round (on purpose for the Lols, and quite difficult to get right)cringe? Hardly:smile:

I just take my own to work.
Anything I have bought, be it from the 2 local bakeries or the coffee shops has ended up down the plug hole after a couple of sips.

I've decided I've had enough of a certain chain of coffee shop, so I've started only using independent places, and if anyone insists on going to a 'chain', then I've decided to go to another particular one. Only now has it dawned on me, that the one I was using was actually a bit cack. It's the same with bikes. I only ever bought a select couple of manufacturers bikes, only since I've tried another, have I realised how far the ones I've been loyal to have slipped. I guess this shows that some places / manufacturers have become complacent about how far historic loyalty can be stretched.

I really only do chain coffee shops when I have no other choice and need coffee - like at a train station.

I do try to have the attitude you describe for everything I buy. The intention is there and I have even started using the local butchers that I had not set foot in for 20 years.

But a few big guys slip under the radar - Waitrose and John Lewis.
