Once again showing my complete IT ignorance.
Please explain..........
My phone is on contract (Virgin) so I pay £x per month which gives me so many texts, so much talk time and so much "free" internet...........if I go over that I pay but it does me for what I need.
I know there are certain things I should get the provider to stop (do I call it lift?).......but what ?

I don't plan to use the internet much........just check on CC etc. but there may be a need to research something.

What is best & why
What are my options ?
Thanks

Yes, it is a serious and practical question. Roaming charges are changing very dramatically after that date.
Really. I thought there must be a joke I was missing
I go 4th.
So..........
What does it mean if I ask Virgin to "lift" roaming ?
Is that all I need to do ?
Does that just affect the internet or does it affect call & texts etc.

First you need to look at the detail of the contract plan you are on. That will tell you, when outside UK, how much you will be charged for various things like making a call, sending a text, using 1MB of data

Once you've done that you need to think how much this might cost you on your holiday

It maybe that Virgin offers a "bundle" you can buy as a one off cost. This will allow a specific amount of data, calls etc. It will all be on the website

You may need to get Virgin to allow your phone to be used outside UK anyway. If you look on their website or give them a call I'm sure they will help

Am with BT mobile, the UK allowances will apply to Europe from 1st June for their customers
So, to summarise; you used to have to pay extra to use your phone abroad, on top of your allowance. By the end of the month you take your allowance with you and don't pay any extra.
Correct although there will be fair usage limits. For instance if you have an unlimited 3 contract you have a fair usage of 12gb per month.
Possibly you don't realise, but it will be zero roaming costs in the EU, no matter which supplier you use. Lots of suppliers have had this in place for ages, but not many UK ones.
From June 15 (unless your provider already does this anyway). OP is going abroad on June 4

I'm abroad from the 20th. Prompted by the thread I just called Tesco mobile. Navigate their menu system, was through to a very pleasant human within 30 seconds, he lifted the roaming bar and proudly informed me there are no extra charges for using my phone abroad. Very easy, and a typically efficient and pleasant Tesco Mobile customer service experience.
