Taking the bike to the tip (no, not in that way!)

Wondering what the response from veolia will be?

Dear Sir/Madam

I am of the understanding that pedestrian access is not permitted to Household Waste Recycling Centres in Sheffield, and can understand that at busy times this prevents people leaving cars blocking entrance roads to unload before entering the site.

I wish to enquire, however, if access by bicycle with trailer is permitted?

As I am keen to recycle rather than send to landfill, but also prefer not to use my vehicle unnecessarily, I do use my bicycle and trailer to transport commonly recycled goods such as cans, bottles and paper to local facilities in supermarkets etc, however occasionally there may be electrical goods, garden waste and other items best dealt with by taking to an HWRC.

Would I (a) be permitted to access the sites by bicycle, and ( if pulling a trailer with said bicycle, bearing in mind that it would be highly unlikely that trade waste would be disposed of by cycle trailer - would I need a permit for this, in the same way that I would need a permit for a MOTOR vehicle?

I look forward to your reply
I somehow think that I am going to be told that I have to drive to the tip...shame.

my guess will be you'll be allowed, you 're a vehicle after all and right in line with their suposed green eco ethos

My guess will be if you stand nervously by the entrance they'll kick you out like happens at other tips up and down the land. If you cycle confidently in at a reasonable speed and ignore their protests they'll shrug it off.

I'd just like to have a reply on paper before I go.

Reason being its a big bloody hill to ride up with a laden trailer on the way there and an even bigger hill on the way back if I am still laden.

Here in sarf London it's no problem.
I take the plastic (food containers etc), tetra packs, used batteries there every few weeks. Last week I took a 17" crt monitor strapped (precariously) to the rack:blush:.
I've seen a guy with a trailer there before full of garden 'waste' and rubble. Wish I had one as I've 2 washing machines to get rid of!

Considering that when I tried to dump a suspended light unit & was told that I couldn't as it hadn't been safety tested. I think the jobsworths at the local tip would have every eventuality covered"

If they didn't let me in I'd just empty the trailer there and then, ride off and let them pick it up. Sorry but that's what would happen. I wouldn't go back and repeat it though.

With respect, what's this got to do with commuting?

I pushed a widescreen CRT on a warehouse trolley on foot almost two miles to the tip. And when I got there they didn't even have walkup access. I had to push it up a 1 storey ramp to the vehicle entrance. And then push the trolley home again.

What have a lot of things in here to do with commuting? As for many threads on here, it's more to do with "general use".

But if you really want to be nitpicky about it, with respect, since it is my thread and I tend to make my tip visits when they are necessary, as a detour on my way to work, then for me it falls within the boundaries of my commute, as in "to travel some distance regularly between one's home and one's place of work"

Not to disappoint but I'd check what the opening hours are if you haven't. Don't want you getting up Gleadless Valley at 5:30pm and discovering it has just closed.

It seemed like a fair question when I wrote it but then guessed afterwards that you'd be going there on your way to or from work and I'd look like an arse.
No offence meant, hence the "with respect".
