Can't add too much here other than kit..

Multi tool, or a few common allen keys (all singing multi tool would be a good long term option).

2 or 3 good tyre levers - e.g. Park, Michelin, Pedros or Decathlon for example

2 spare tubes and a small puncture kit (just in case).

1 set of latex gloves - I used not to, but changing a wet crudded up tyre just gets your hands filthy.

Good pump - Topeak Road Morph are v. good
 
I do an 8 mile hilly commute in just over 30 minutes - it was about 45mins-1 hour when I started. The time came down by 15-20 minutes after the first 3 months and since then is more influenced by the weather and wind conditions than anything else.

'Keep you tyres pumped up' was the best advice I got. It helps you roll faster and makes punctures less likely.
