I have been a TT customer for a number of years, they are not perfect but as far as I can tell no worse than some of the others, I have TT line rental & fibre broadband unlimited, always great speed great for watching movies etc.

I you can, get Virgin: pay the around 150.00 year's line rental in advance, get unlimited broadband for 10.00 a month.
You'll need to pay for all your phone calls though, so do them on Skype or on your mobile.

I just went to the TalkTalk website. It shows the progress that they are making fixing my email problem. It showed that I reported it on 6th August and that they have "diagnosed" the fault and have started "fixing" it. There's a bit on the page that shows their estimated time for when the repair might be fixed. Guess what? It's blank.
Please don't listen to the TalkTalk fanboys. I beg you!

You can do a few things.

Firstly BT have a usage monitor on your My BT Home Page so you can see how much you are using. Basic web stuff 10 hours a day will get you through around 6-8GB a month so it is a matter of eliminating/minimising the other stuff.

If you go over its only a few quid and I'm not really sure that they can/will force you to upgrade if you go over the limit for two or more months.

They also do a one-off advance payment for line rental which is basically a 12 months for the price of 10 type deal.

Can't comment on Talk Talk, but personally I'll never go back to BT ever, ever again. I waited three months for a BT engineer to come and install phone and Internet in my current house. Had six missed appointments. Thought I was tied into them as I had moved house, and had six months left to run.

Eventually got fed up, rang Sky, they gave me an appointment for 1 week later which was kept, and I was up and running.

As some may know, it was a BT engineer that was sent out, contacted by Sky! He said it's common - the other companies that contact them get money back if BT fail to keep their appointments, so it's the BT customers that lose out.

Plus for Plusnet from me, they recently got BT to rewire my phone cable from the outside of the property all the way through to the master socket after an intermittent problem that I was having. Been perfect ever since and didnt have to pay a penny. Only downside is that certain services are limited to a 3mbs download speed during the day, even on their unlimited service.

What services are limited ? I have had Plusnet unlimited fibre for 3 years and not come across this.

I got a text from TT earlier today telling me that they had solved my email problem. They hadn't. When I spoke to them they said it wasn't a problem with their line or their servers. It's a problem with Microsoft's software apparently. One of my PCs runs XP and Outlook Express, the other one Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail. Both machines show the same email problem. For them both to have problems with Microsoft at the same time seems a bit unlikely. I signed up to PlusNet within twenty minutes of putting the phone down. Life's too short.

Pipex were good, but were taken over by Tiscali who were rather poor but in turn were taken over by TalkTalk who were utterly abysmal. Download speed ended up being slower than dialup. We switched to plusnet. I've no idea what their customer service or helplines are like as we've never had to use them.
