Has anyone on here been on one, thought of having a go on one or owns one? If so can you tell me if it's a lot different to riding a conventional bike and how do both riders communicate? Say for example the captain hits the brakes if a car pulls out how would the stalker know if he has his eyes to the floor? I'd love to have a go on one, maybe i'd regret it?

Stoker has the chance of taking a rest. Balance can be harder on them, starting out. You've to be able to trust each other not to do anything unexpected. Stoker can act as a rear gunner, keeping more of a watch to the rear when needed. Due to length not as easy manhandle or store.

You get the chance to try one, in either position, take it! You can get a greater speed for less effort(combined).

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Stalker?!

Plenty on tandems in the "Special Interests" section. Just search for ...err... "Tandem"

Not a lot different, But;

Heavier, so faster downhill, slower uphill - that said I feel safer doing 80km/h on the tandem than I do would on my single ^_^

Needs practice to use efficiently and safely - starting off is difficult at first.

The pilot (captain) rules, so if he says pedal the stoker pedals and does not try to resist - this can be dangerous in junction / turning situations. So the stoker must trust the pilot completely

My stoker wife does the signalling and shares the 'looking out' at junctions and turns.

It's more sociable - having bought one originally because my wife is not too confident on a single and kept getting left behind (osteo-arthritis)
24 years later we are now on our 2nd tandem.

A definite talking point, especially here, where by far the majority of tandems are non-French owned.

We were even pulled over by 2 motorcycle mounted Gendarmes once, because one of them was a keen cyclist and he had never seen a tandem before:laugh:
You can ride one on your own, but the back tends to skip about, without the stoker's weight

loads of subtle differences ie moving off , downhill is FUN , cornering both have to lean , climbing is hard as you cant get stand up and dance on the pedals

if you want to try one feel free to give me a shout somewhere in back of garage is a Raleigh mtb style one

Mrs A_T and I love our tandem... it's a 'less expensive' Viking one so a bit heavier and not as well specced as the more expensive ones but it's great.

It's not as fast as a racing tandem but fantastic for 12-14mph enjoying the day out. Done 195 miles on it since we got it in April time.

It's surprisingly easy and feels very stable, you soon get to know ehen the other person wants to freewheel or stand up on the pedals for a rest! Great for signalling and looking around more- no problems with heavy braking. 37mph fastest downhill to date!!

Have a go Accy- you can rent a tandem in selected LBS, we've hired them too for an afternoon for around £25.

Well, write it down boy ......
I got one a couple of years ago thinking it would a bit of a toy, but we use it loads. My wife has a very good solo bike but I can't remember the last time she used it as we always go on the tandem. It's great fun, more sociable, a good head turner and we seem to get much more room from passing cars. The stoker looks out at junctions and does the hand signals.
Fast on the flat, but generally slower up hills. We've got the hang of the stoker standing uphill. You can both stand on the pedals going uphill, but this takes a lot of practice. I know a tandem team who both stand and they are much faster than me uphill when I'm on my solo.
