Hi. I have next Friday off and am planning a route from Barlborough to Bakewell. I'd really like to avoid the A6 from Rowsley to Bakewell if I can.

I can see from http://www.peakcyclelinks.org.uk/section11.html that plans were in hand in August 2011 to extend the monsal trail through the Haddon Hall ground and tunnels - did that ever become a reality ? OpenCycle maps don't show any routes through there.

The OS map shows a road/track which joins with Coombs Rd but I don't know if it's usable. Anyone shed any light ?

The whole route I'm looking at (including lunch at Hassop Station Cafe) is here ... http://my.viewranger.com/route/details/MTU5NDQ=

I'd welcome comments and improvements, especially to avoid busy roads. Quite happy to take on a few climbs, I think the route is a shade over 45 miles and about 3,500 ft climbing.

Perhaps this route through Edensor would be better, if the Haddon route isn't an option

Mr Marmoset is right - there is no such thing as a bakewell tart in Bakewell. They're an abomination invented by Mr Kipling. The puddings though = oh my.........

I haven't done Chesterfield to Bakewell in (oh god now I'm depressed) about 25 years so can't help with up to date stuff, but, along with some lungbursting climbs, you've got some sketchy descents.... Your Edensor route could be a real winner, but look out on that descent off Hell-Bank, last time we drove up it (just before Christmas) it was *very* gravelly (which will be exacerbated by frost and rain).

Oh and I know they are puddings, but the "pudding trek" doesn't quote have the same appeal. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Right, if the forecast says no fog we're doing this tomorrow. Will feed back on the Edensor route.

Having done this route yesterday it's not an option for road bikes for sure. Very rough and steep. Quite good fun on a Hybrid/CX though.
