We have a tin of Syrup in the cupboard and I think it has been there since the kids make flapjacks about five years ago. I think it is one of those things you have in the cupboard but never use.
Similarly half the spices in the spice rack seem to date from about 1995.
I actually fancy some Syrup on toast now.

It was stated yesterday that such a thing is wrong, because it means you can squirt it straight into cooking, whereas with a tin you have to use a spoon, and a lot sticks to the spoon, and you have to lick it off....
Been around a year or more I think - I never buy any but the tins.

When I was a lad I'm sure it used to be called treacle and then there was black treacle for cake making. Or am I just imagineing it?

It may be a Brum thing, but treacle is not the same as syrup - treacle is much darker, and more strongly flavoured - it's almost.... smokey sounds odd, but it's like the difference between bitter and stout.
If you want a mild out of body experience, have a beer and stare deeply into a tin of treacle. I did this once (it happened to be out on the kitchen table), and just sat there saying "It's so black....."

Much to my annoyance, Mrs F calls Golden Syrup 'treacle'.... as do her siblings and remaining parent. It really winds me up. Treacle is treacle, syrup is syrup. Thankfully she knows the difference between petrol and diesel.

I was just trying to get the message across in a nice simple fashion so folk would realise that this savoury pancake nonsense is just wicked and wrong. It's fine to put syrup on health foods such as sponge puddings.
