May I ask a question about c*rs? Is it illegal to have your car parked by the side of the road (presumed here to be a side road, and not a dual cabbageway or highway) with the engine running? I think the circumstances were that someone was trying to get their car started, using jump leads from another vehicle, and was told it was illegal to do that in a street.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal to jump start another vehicle in the street (I'm prepared to be corrected on this), but I am aware that some councils have introduced bylaws making it illegal to sit with the engine running on the street for more than a certain amount of time. (To reduce pollution donchaknow .)

Of course this is pretty nonsensical, coz if you move the car on to a private drive you can run it all day if you want.

26by25 I have no intention of going out for some chocolate. I might have Hot Choc later, made with Twinings Swiss Choc powder. :cuppa:

Lunch was a bit mixed up. My mother thought that a three pound (in weight) chicken would cook in 30 minutes. So the potatoes were getting burnt while the chicken was nowhere near ready. We therefore had the roast potatoes as the starter, followed nearly an hour later by chicken with lots of vegetables. Dessert was a very yummy Gü lemon cheesecake.

Ah yes - there is some Hot Choc powder in the larder - thanks for the reminder. I didn't mean this minute for chocolate shopping - just when you next go will be fine

That sounds a bit like Mrs 26's cooking. I have been presented by partly cooked chicken before now...........

I think running the car engine with no one in might be illegal. It's to do with someone being in charge I think. To be in charge you have to be in the driver seat when the engine is running. But again someone who knows better will come along in a minute.....

I would have thought that common sense* would prevail, if one was jump starting a car, and then running the engine of the jump startee to revive a flat battery. Just idling an engine for no good reason, would be unnecessary and noisy.

* Not all that common today, it would seem.

That would make more sense, I suppose. You can be drunk in charge of a vehicle, if you have the car keys in your hand, and show an intention to drive a vehicle.

We have a bottle of Pinot Noir but can't figure out what film to watch tonight. Something non taxing that probably allows Arch to play games on her laptop at the same time.

In the end, we watched a very silly thing on Quest about the impending Apocalypse on the 21st (lots of 'experts' explaining the various doomsday scenarios, before saying how unlikely/downright impossible they were, with CGI scenes of devastation) before settling together on one sofa to watch Convoy on video.

<sings> We've got a mighty Con-voy.....</sings>

I need a day off before I over do it, going to be a short week next week so have to do more in less time.

Don't break yourself! I wish I could just stay here and help! Got to go home this morning, and get Christmas shopping sorted out this afternoon. Fortunately, I've done most of it online, and other people just want money towards big items, so it's just cards and stocking fillers.:santa:

As far as I know it is illegal to leave a vehicle on the public road with the engine running. The engine should be switched off before leaving the driver's seat.
If you are working on your vehicle (checking the engine or assisting another*), or using equipment that requires the engine to remain running (lorry loading cranes, etc) you are still with your vehicle an so it 'should' be ok. However, it would not be legal to start your engine and then go indoors for a cup of tea while waiting for it to warm up, which is the more common event.

I think the law was in place to prevent vehicle accidentally running away but now it would be more relevant to insurance companies as they would have good cause not to pay out in the event of a runaway or a theft of the vehicle.

* To jump start another car, you should connect the batteries while the engines are not running, then start your own car and sit in it while the engine is running in order to charge the other car's battery, then switch off the engine and wait while the other driver attempts to start their engine. At this point you should have your hand on the black crocodile clip on the jump lead so that the moment the other car's engine fires up the lead is disconnected. This prevents any high voltage spikes from their, possibly faulty, alternator from causing damage to the alternator in your own car.
You would then disconnect the leads and close both bonnets allowing the other car to drive away.
In that way neither car is left running without the driver in the driving seat.

Working at the kerbside, we see quite a lot of cars left with engines running. Not exactly secure! We tend to say stuff like "Oh, hey, Steve, do you want a BMW? I've found one..."
