Can I ask a question about tyre sizes? I have a Coventry Eagle languishing in my garage, waiting to be ridden. In the For Sale section is a pair of tyres. How do I measure the wheel size for tyres?

If I measure across the inside of the rims of the wheel, it is 25½ inches. The outside of the rim diagonally across to the other side is 26½ inches. If I measure across from the outside of the tyre, it is 27 inches. If the tyre was fully inflated, it would be 1¼ inches across. The tyres for sale, by Psyclist, are 27 x 1¼, so are they the right size?

I'm no help, NT will know. I'll point him this way when he comes out of the shower.

However, there may be a clue. Do the old tyres have a size marked on them? It may be moulded into the sidewall at some point...

Sheldon Brown tyre sizing page.

You will need to measure the diameter from the bead seat I think.

If the bead seat diameter (BSD) is 630mm then any 27" tyre will fit.

Psyclist very kindly sent me that link. Sheldon says to add 6 or 8 mm to the bsd. The bsd is, I think, 26 or 26½ inches, and 8mm is 5/16 inch. So do I add 2 times 5/16? in which case it is .... hmm .... ooo... .... 27¼.

I will measure it again in daylight tomorrow, using millimetres to see if I need 27 inch tyres. Thank you for your help, Night Train. ^_^

It's bound to be moulded / printed onto the tyre sidewall, as Arch says.
You'll see either 622 x something (which is a Continental/metric/modern size tyre), or 27 x 1 1/4, or maybe 630 x 32 (which is also 27 by 1 1/4, but expressed in mm rather than inches).
The size may well be stamped into the wheel rim as well.- I've seen that before.

I would say that I will use a magnifying glass, but that is no doubt also very old-fashioned. At least if I know what I am looking for, I might be able to find it. It still has the tyres that were on it when I bought it (second-hand) in about 1996.

If the size is moulded in, it shouldn't be too small. It may help if you can hold a light like a torch obliquely to the tyre to highlight the raised moulding...
