I tried to drive back from Kidderminster today, but the motorway was closed. There were reports that someone had welded a crane on the back of a bicycle and added an electric motor from a fork lift. The Mistery of Transport decided to close the motorway while the vehicle in question completed its journey south.

Did anyone else hear about this?

So that's what happened.

I had to take a variety of A and B roads to get home, I was nearly an hour later then expected.

So, Scania truck driver (BD11AEK or was it AD11AEK) on the M6 south lane 2, driving 6' from my back bumper at 56mph will not make me go any faster especially when there is a truck in front of me and all three lanes are going no faster. I know it wasn't personal as you were also glued to the back of several trucks when I was in lane 1 but you are still an arse.

Strange people who drive at 35-40mph on the motorway when everyone else is driving at over 60mph. You're mad, especially the one in lane 2!

Mr Paul's bike delivered safe and sound.

Just butting in before war breaks out, I'd like to announce that my Morris 8 is off to a new home.

I'm quite sad to see it go but the new owner seems to be an enthusiatic chap and will hopefully give it the TLC it deserves.

Arch I have finished the back of the cow. I'm now having problems with the front. Have cast on 28 st and p1 row, then knit one row then purl. Now the pattern states for the next row K2 (inc in next st, k3) 6 times, inc in next st, k1. 35sts.

How do you increase stitches? Thank you Arch. I'm off to bed as my head is as the pattern is sending me a bit

Oh god, I couldn't possibly begin to explain it in words.

Seriously, I'd have to show you in person, it's not something words alone can explain. You need to see pictures at least. It's done by picking up a loop between stitches as you knit, but it's hard to describe.

Have you tried googling for an online picture guide? Maybe a video? If all else fails I can show you, or lend you a book with pictures of the basic techniques, but it'll have to be next week, I'm off to Manchesterford tomorrow...

PS. if you google, watch out for American sites, they use all sorts of different terms).

PPS. It might be worth doing a quick trawl round some charity shops for a basic knitting book that has step by step guides. Even if it's an old book with out of date fashion patterns, if it has a step by step guide, that won't be out of date.

The simplest is the first one, where you knit, then pick the loop between that stitch and the next, knit it, and then carry on with the next stitch. I'd probably use the second one, where you knit into a stitch twice. I'm not sure those diagrams are mega useful, but maybe if you follow the words with your knitting in hand, they'll make sense. If you've got spare needles, it's worth making a practice piece (just cast on 10 stitches or so, SS a few rows and then start experimenting with increases) to see how the techniques work.

It's so hard to describe, because it's all become instinctive.

In the 20+ years since I first learnt how to knit, I've never managed to progress beyond dishcloths*. And I've forgotten how to cast on again.
