I am not sure if it is a coincidence or what. This afternoon Tasha decided that the best place to sit was on the lid of my plant propagator.

That reminded me to see if the plants inside it had enough water. Perhaps because I did not put the lid back on properly and because she had sat on it (all five kilos of her) and it was an extremely blustery afternoon, somehow the lid ended up in about ten pieces on the patio. Fortunately most of the pieces are large, so they have been taped back together with wide parcel tape, to continue to provide some sort of protection for my baby Callistemon plants.

The next few questions may be something that Arch can answer. ^_^

What sort of glue should I use for a more permanent mending of the lid? Or can I use some large lemonade bottles to make mini-cloches for the plants? I was thinking about cutting each bottle in half length-wise, so that the "wall" of the mini-cloche would be double thickness. Then I would have to cut a notch in one half so that the inner half fits inside the outer half. Are you with me so far?

Fortunately I have about a dozen large lemonade bottles ( don't ask) in my recycling depot utitlity room, awaiting being made into something useful. The tray of the propagator is more substantial than the lid, so can be used again in a recycled lemonade bottle cloche.

I take it back!

I asked her if there was anything in particular she wanted to do, or places she wanted to visit. She wants to go on the Man United ground tour!

Oh lord, you will get her to do that before the weekend won't you?

I don't suppose she'd make do with driving past Old Trafford, and then doing a tour of tool outlets in Trafford Park?:giggle:

<Wistful> Those cakes look nice. I expect they'll go really quickly.... </wistful>

I was going out for a meal with colleagues tonight, but I'm too tired. It's a new restaurant, so I'll let them find out if it's any good....

I think so.... Do you need long cloches then, as opposed to tall ones? The simplest thing would be to cut a bottle in half round the middle, and that gives you two 'bell' type cloches - you can trim them to the right height, but they cover a smaller, circular surface area. But using the length would work. No idea about the glue, I suspect whatever glue you used would need some sort of tape to support the joins over the long term.

We were asked a while back for 50 or more 2lt pop bottles, for a University project. They are using them as little incubators to breed aphids in! Apparently, they are working very well, and they've just asked for a load more.

Sorry  Arch, I did mean tall ones. I know I still have the bottle tops. Should I have said "cut them in half horizontally"?

I have seen on a website somewhere where they made a small green house out of plastic bottles. (Edit here it is) I just have about one dozen or so baby plants, taken from cuttings, and cossetted until they are big enough to plant out. I have been successful with Buddleias and Potentillas. The Callistemons, aka Bottle brush plant, are much more slow growing. In the severest of the weather, I brought them indoors, but they probably get too dry too easily indoors.

Interesting to note that at the Pump House, they thought that the green house from plastic bottles idea was not a very good one. The bottles will eventually go brittle, but then cannot be recycled.

My idea is to use a few bottles to avoid buying half a propagator which eventually gives way under the weight of a heavy cat I forget to put securely back on the base. I would add that I was given the propagator as a present and it has lasted well for about seven years.

It may be difficult to glue, depending on the sort of plastic it is.

If it were me I would drill tiny holes along the breaks and wire them together, like medical sutures. That and an epoxy resin might do it. You will need to test a bit of the glue on the plastic though.

Certainly another windy ride home this morning, had a right downpour during the night too which has left the roads very wet.
