When you change gears does the rear mech move at all?

If you grab the cable where it runs along the down tube does it feel taut?

Do you mean the left hand gears? (1-3) I can move those.
The RH (1-9) triggers just move back and forwards with no tension.
The cable along the down tube is loose

Grab the cable near the down tube and pull it away from the shifter. If you can pull it tight hold it like that and see if the shifter still works when you click through the gears.

Done that - theres some resistance but the shifters aren't 'clicking'

Did you work that out all for yourself, thought you weren't very handy?

From what you've said there it sounds like the shifter might be poo.

The shifters are crap tbh. Cheap end of the Shimano range

If you can still pull the cable tight that suggests it's still located in the shifter, it's hard to say without seeing it in the flesh though.

Is it Priscilla or Arabella, I can't remember now?
