I'm crawling through my brain trying to find the cultural reference that makes sense of 'Pipettes', I know of the band called 'The Pipettes' but I don't think they were a Swindon product.

Nor can I. The only connection, albeit tenuous I can even make up is: Pipette=Small tube, Bill Piper=Small singer, Pipes= like on an organ, Singer= Good pipes (as in colloquial use for singers vocal performance)
What that has to do with Swindon don't know. Personally I think you should have kept quiet and let us all wonder about the workings of your mind.

EDIT: Or indeed mine, which is a very strange place indeed and, as my children often tell me, only funny to me.

Facts about Swindon eh? From my house to my first call in Swindon was about 95 minutes. One of the camera shops I called at had proprietor who was a specialist Whisky dealer/retailer as well, and his camera shop in Newbury had a separate one in the back that sold fine malts. T4 Cameras, may still be there.
