Has your fella been difficult to match up with any doners ? or is it just the case that it is difficult to match anyone etc ?

He's an O+ blood group so fairly universal really. He was taken off The List 3 weeks ago as he's having difficulty with the fluid restriction at the moment. He's so thirsty the whole time, permanently dehydrated. A couple of his meds give him the squits too, so he's even more dehydrated which makes him even more cranky. Hopefully he will go back on it in a week or two. Fingers crossed anyway. The average wait for a kidney is 2 - 3 years.

It's difficult to match anyone with a donor as so many people won't carry a donor card and those that do often have their wishes vetoed by their next of kin. I came across some real charmers when I was doing a Half Ironman to raise money for Kidney Research UK. On the professional forum that I no longer go on, I got a huge rant about how medical companies test on animals and how it's immoral to support such research companies. I got a pretty much universal 'no' for any sponsorship with a surprising amount saying that they would never carry a donor card and that they would veto their husband's or children's wishes. The vitriol was quite shocking. I stopped going on that site there and then but not before posting about how brave I thought that they all were as obviously they would never accept any anti-cancer drugs, dialysis, any organ donation and whatnot should they fall ill. Funnily, they all would take any medical intervention offered. Strange that. They were horrible people anyway.

It'll all come out in the wash. Living on the list is not a laugh but you become used to it, become used to sleeping with your phone and never letting it go flat. In the meantime, we carry on as normal and pray for a miracle.

Unable to be a donor, blood or organ, due to the lifelong anti-epileptic medication. Unfortunatly the same medication may just have buggered my liver up. So I may soon be sleeping with a phone on me 24 hours a day. Awaiting the tests & then the results. Initial tests results were not to promising.

If it helps at all, the liver transplant list is shorter and the use of live donors is a big thing in liver donation. I worked with a woman who'd husband needed a liver transplant and he got one within 36 hours when he became 'properly ill' I wasn't quite sure what the woman meant by properly ill, I'm guessing confined to a hospital bed. Sadly he drank that one to death too.

I am off to give blood on Wednesday. I'll give an extra drop for you @classic33. If I can't do that, I'll have an extra biccy for you.
