Home from w***. I popped into the Norwich Waitrose for my free coffee, having done my shopping first (buttermint tea on offer in Waitrose). The cafe woman said I couldn't have coffee in a takeaway cup as I hadn't bought a meal (it seems they have changed the free coffee thing). I politely said that I had made a purchase and lifted my shopping bag to illustrate. She virtually snarled back "well you haven't bought anything, have you madam", the last word being spat at me. I politely replied that I had queued and I had made a purchase and she snarled again, with a lot of attitude in her voice "You have to buy a meal if you wanna cuppa coffee" and stomped off through the door behind the tills. Rude cow. She was at least 60 so you'd have thought that she'd have learned some customer service skills by now.

I have rung and complained to customer services. To make matters worse, another employee pointed me to the self serve across the way. When I got there, the takeaway cups wouldn't come apart, they were all stuck together. When I asked a staff member for a help (again, politely) they told me that I "should have brought someone with me with stronger hands or I should just try harder"

Norwich Waitrose are the pits. If you are in the vicinity, Sainsburys are a much better class of cafe and customer service. </rant>

Oh dear! For an organisation that justify their prices on top quality service you'd think they would be trying harder! Good on you for complaining, I'd follow it up with an email and ask for a response within 7 days. If you don't get any write to your local paper, that'll get their notice ;)

Not ideal when they are at war with Aldi, Lidl, Asda etc. for customers.

I did make a point of telling the lady on the telephone that the customer service in my local Aldi is excellent. Nothing too much trouble. They don't stock the teabags that I was after or I would have gone there. I used to use Waitrose cafe as a regular coffee & cake stop on bike rides. I'll find a local independent one. Waitrose has a camera on the bike racks so it's nice and safe, which is why I used it. That and a free coffee.

I did find the free coffee thing a bit weird in their Edinburgh store - you had to go to customer services with your receipt and Card to receive another receipt, to then queue at a coffee machine that was open to anyone and didn't need a receipt to use so you were queueing behind people who hadn't bought anything but were helping themselves to free coffee!

Maybe that's why it's changed...

In the Wymondham branch, you wandered into the cafe bit. Asked for a coffee, showed them your card and they said "right, OK" and handed over your cuppa. After about a year, they took your card and scanned it and handed over the coffee as people had been getting 2 or 3 coffees a day and spoiling it for everyone else. now you have to make a purchase to get a coffee. The email I received did not make it clear that you had to get a meal in the cafe to get a cafe coffee. There are now self service ones where you get your own - if you can get the tightly wedged cups apart, Hubster couldn't and there is nothing wrong with his hands - without anyone asking for a receipt or anything.

Well they've just lost your custom for the sake of a free coffee - wonder how many times that's happened today? (Not to you, if it has happened to you more than once that's just weird!! And unlucky...)

I hate setting foot in Waitrose for anything, it feels like passive aggressive gentility is imbibed by every employee before they're allowed to communicate with the customers. It's disturbing
