Not yet: winters are usually dry here so we'll probably have to wait for snow to reach our altitude. The hills in the distance should be white soon enough though.

Straight across to the Rhine would be best, unless you're planning on dragging that thing overland.

Get a tow from a ship leaving Hull, having left Halifax, then possibly up one of the major rivers.

Almost. Esslingen is on the river Neckar, which joins the Rhine at Mannheim. You could get a tow all the way in theory as we have a harbour in Stuttgart and one in Plochingen, which is upriver of us.
There is a cycleway 99% of the way from Rotterdam to Esslingen along the river. This means you can follow two rivers for almost the same distance as the LEJOG.
