Sounds as though you gave up on the metal detecting for similar reasons I gave up on radio.

Possibly but propagation shifts about in mysterious ways, more likely increase in signal strength..

First call, if I upped the power to say 50 watts, it could improve to -4db..
2nd, the same it could get to -1 db I only need 6 watts..
3rd, 50 watts takes it to -11db..
6 watts would take it to -20db
4th, 50 would take it to -10 and 6 to -19 db..
Unfortunately there could be violent swings of propagation, one min good, next minute weak....
Around 11.30 to 12.00 earlier I got spotted by roughly 16 Japanese stations , the image shows how localised it can be and it doesn't mean the area between me and them would all be picking me up, the old eastern block at west on the Black sea was..

Simple sounding solution isn't as simple as it seems. With a load of variables outside your control. The ionsphere being well beyond your control.
What was it of yours that were picked up? Callsign only or another repeater signal.

Go HERE it explains it easier than I can (FT8)
WSPR2 is different but still the same principle, a TX lasts 110.6 sec and send my calls, maidenhead locator power etc, repeated of course.
As it is 108 sec long, it can reach the other station better than the short 12.6 sec FT8, peaks and troughs of propagation.
a FT8 exchange can last 6 exchanges, can be cut to 5...
WSPR is just a sending of rx'ed signal to a central database via the program
You also have FT4 which is 4.48 secs long so is faster again but slightly less sensitive.
WSPR2 can decode down to -34db
FT8 can get to -26db
FT4 struggles at -20db although I once had a -22db report..
