I had use of a Honda 250 in the mid 70s,
bloke defaulted on payments, I offered him the money to clear it, nope, it got repossessed, I could never work that out plus he needed it for work, same place as me but had to travel further up the coast to get another ferry as he did permanent nights, whit?

I think I would struggle, it was more a check on flaky concrete and any little flaws which had to be 'chipped' out and filled with a resin then smoothed, it was walking about the walls keeping an eye and dealing with the permanent onsite insurance bloke, serious stuff in those days, one of us had to be there at all times but it wasn't a massive physical job except when the old scabbling gun came out. What a racket in such and exposed place. Dined well as my mate ran the food shack on the platform, the scrambled egg rolls were sublime...
Canteen was a fair bit away and again, lunchbreak was quick off then back on and the other disappeared, oh for a walkman type in those days..

I decided that it really wasn't for me, I was having the time of my life in the then fading holiday resort, a normal job would suffice, I made the mistake of leaving the council job I had in the Roads TBH but hey, I'd never have met the future Mrs M if I'd followed the money.

Ardyne? It was an exposed to all weathers type place, glad we worked 99% of the time in the 'cells', I did a full winter and wore that much clothing I could barely move if up the leg on the skyclimber, the scenery was good, approx four hour commuting a day.
They had a 'camp', I could have got a place there but apart from a bar, it had no real facilities, a small room to crash in and keep yer gear..
Worked with a Donegal lad who was there to get the money to buy his local village shop, never found out if he did. made some good friends through it. A time to remember.

Waiting on the holy terror appearing,
You were in yer "motorbike days" at the time. Makes sense given the distance and terrain being travelled on yer commute.
You had the use of someone else's motorbike?
He declined yer offer of paying it off. Nice offer from yerself there, wonder why he never took it up, given he travelled even further than yerself. Were he always a little pale looking, avoiding daylight, that sorta thing...
More a mentally job than physical, for the best part by the sound of it. Just stop yerself climbing the walls as you went round them checking, and keeping an eye on things. Keeping the office bods happy.
Is that where yer love of food stems from. Yer mates on site scrambled egg rolls. I bet the canteen were near the site offices, meaning those in them didn't have as far to walk.

You gave it a go though. Of things that might have been if only... You enjoyed doing yer own thing, and the freedom, too much to be tied to one job for life. Suppose there is that wee bit to consider, not everything is about money.

In the cells, sounds like a prison camp. One where the inmates aren't likely to wander off due to the surrounding area.
Take it it were cold, that winter you worked there. Think of the craic there'd have been in that camp. The ever present bar, the possible disagreements, the wind blowing through any crack or gap it could. Think of what you missed...
Maybe travel to Donegal and search him out. You can dig the tunnel to save any arguments, stop any disagreements.
Sounds as though you enjoyed yerself whatever you were thinking at the time.

Thought you'd double duty today?
