LIVING THE DREAM
If you have lightweight shoes, pedals, cleats all fitting and adjusted properly, you can pedal faster. You do start to notice gyroscopic effects though.

I just use lightweight legs with lightweight feet attached.

More seriously I do use MTB style cleats and pedals and a pair of Mavic 'Sports' Road Shoes made for the MTB/Touring type cleats so I have no trouble if I need to jump off and run to the bathroom or go and get the water bottle I filled up but left in the Kitchen.
I find them perfectly satisfactory but I don't deny that some good road shoes and pedals would probably be better.

However what I have is far better than the all leather lace up Sidi's with 'nail on' cleats that I used to race with.
But at least they had a multi layered sole with a metal brace plate.
The shoes I had before that had just one or two layers of leather on the sole and were braced with a 'nail on' long TA type cleats.

What a course to have a mare on!
Front derailer wouldn't shift down halfway up the second mountain!

Pure evil that one!

So that's why I shot passed you on that climb and I thought this is good, I've actually passed somebody.

I take it you got it sorted, as you soon caught me up, and I tried to stay with you for a few miles, but eventually I cracked and off you went into the distance.

Thanks for the encouragement @Soarerv8 - my power was dropping like a stone and was i glad to get to the finish of that one.

I think I'll have to pass on the Saturday rerun, as I doubt I will have recovered by then.

The good news is next week's course looks far more suited to we husky gentlemen.

Not bad Bill, 0-70 in around 10 seconds, and at only 49 Watts... :notworthy:

Strangely it shows you doing 0 mph for a split second just before and your avatar seemed to pause then recover!

God that course looks pretty horrendous. Well done to anyone who had a crack at it.

I'll definately have a go tomorrow. Even though if it looks like a total sufferfest, I'm sure it's excellent training

Tommy, Treat it as 5-7 min intervals session. See how long you last

Finally got around to make a session up that goes up in 1% steps. I did one the other day and the steps were too long and were not even so by the time I finished it I couldn't remember what the lengths of the slopes were.
This one goes up 1% every 200m so from 0 to 200m you at 1%, 600 to 800 4% (800/200), 1400 to 1600 8% etc.
Looking at the attached screenshot for me at 76kg (on BKool) and at roughly 300 Watts my speed flat lines by 2400m i.e. 12%
I am going to try it at other powers and weights at the weekend to see what results I get. Unfortunately my cadence started recording like a Pro with no Cadence sensor fitted otherwise my cadence would help confirm the flat line as by then I was already on my lowest sprocket.

The session is called Up and Up 1% per 200m for anyone who wants to try it out of interest.
AAAC, you should try that on a kickr 12% feels considerably harder than on a pro trainer. Is looks like the resistance does plateau around 12%

I tried it last night as couldn't make tonight. Only managed the 5th hill before bailing ... used your ghost @theboxers as a pacer ... well, tried to but by the time I bailed you was already 6 minutes ahead. Might try it again on the weekend if legs have recovered.
Its a tough 1 i bailed after the 4th hill and i aint had a lay off u got good excuse u not been cycling much the past few months
The past few weeks my progress seams to have taken a dive and i seam to be struggling on all the rides

Same here.
Most seem to be making big leaps forward which makes it worse.
I was rubbish on Tuesday. When I went to bike last night I found loads of rubber on the floor (I had not noticed on Tuesday as I just left the cave after my ride in disgust at my time) and it seems that some friend kids who where at my house at the weekend must have messed with the bike and the BKOOL unit was at a very slight angle to the wheel. I guessed I was losing power due to the angle and the wheel not sitting true.

Unfortuanly I was still rubbish last night.

Just need to keep at it. Everybody has off days/weeks. Power on through and I'm sure we will make the gains soon.

Good words of encouragement there @Insomina, as I also feel as though I have dropped back a touch.

Rob, last night's ride was particularly tough and my power was dropping on each 'mountain' we came to - only just survived to the end.

Nothing changed with your setup has there?

Keep at it and i'm sure you'll get where you want to be.

I have a similar problem with my rear wheel moving in the skewer, and in the past have been doing rides thinking 'this is harder than usual' and noticed the tyre rubbing against the frame. I have diagnosed the problem to using an old wheel on the turbo so much that the whole dish of the wheel is out, another reason I need to drop some weight...
