It's thanks to Team Viewer that I can remotely log on to my Dad's computer to fix his problems when they arrise, but he is under strict instructions not to allow anyone else other than me to do this.
+1

It's much better than me saying to my dad "go to start, control panel" and hearing his response of "why's it done that? Oh no. How did that happen" etc ^_^. He knows only to allow connections from me.

I try to keep them on the line as long as possible, making out that im trying to do as they ask but cant. Then say...

"Computer? Did you say computer? I have been trying this on a calculator!"

Then try again... but this time im on a typewriter...

Teamviewer is an excellent tool, but can be used by the naughty mob.

My wife once spent some 45 minutes talking to a ouble glazing salesman about plastic windows for the dining room and the kitchen area

After a long discussion about sising nd shape, he thought he was there and asked when he could visit to measure up

WHen my wift then said, "Don't worry, I will bringthem down"

Stunned silence and then asked her how she was plannig to bringthe house down to them?

Which is whyen my wife explained the windows wer to replace the ones in the tent!

They hung up!

You need to open windows.

Wait 5 minutes and then go back to phone, complaining it is cold with the windows open!

The other one was my wife playing dumb and not being able to identifythe "Windows key", after some time explaining where the key should be and what it looked like, she asked if the absence was due to it being an Apple computer?

I got one of those calls from someone saying they were from Microsoft and had identified a virus on my computer. Very charming young lady and I played her along for about five minutes tapping at the keyboard of the laptop (Which was switched off). We were getting along fine and I told her how greatful I was that Microsoft had such advanced security measures, then asked if I could just put one question to her before I went any further. She told me of of course I could, but hung up when I asked her a very personal question about her bedroom habits.

last time I had one was on a day off and he woke me up... so I was not impressed

Asked him to confirm that he was able to access my system and see a virus.... he did

So I introduced my self as Captain Smyth - Jenkins of Military intelligence, and asked if he was aware that he was stating he had accessed a military computer and was therefore in breach of the Official Secrets act.. ... and the call was being traced at which point the phone went quiet, apart from a conversation with someone in the background.
They then hung up

The thing is the military do trace folk accessing their computers. A decade or so ago I had some kids pi%%ing about on the Army Recruitment web site unbeknown to me. They were typing obscenities into the text entry boxes. It was brought to my attention by a phone call from reception connecting me to a chap from the army asking if I had anyone using computers as we spoke. I answered in the affirmative. He then asked if he could speak to the person logged in as 'Peter Piper'. The kids faces were pictures as I asked which ones were logged onto the Army Recruitment site and Peter Piper was wanted on the phone - they thought that I had x-ray vision and could mind read. Peter Piper identified himself and I invited him to speak to the person on the other end of the phone. Seconds into the conversation he blanched and shook. I never got to the bottom of what was said to him but he was left in no uincertain terms that he could consider himself up the creek without a paddle if he ever repeated his actions.

It was an awesome few minutes that delivered more than I ever could have taught on hacking and some of its consequences.

Thanks for the heads up! I didn't get a call like that but my friends did and I was told that most of the scammers didn't sound like American. Also, their script about knowing something's wrong on your PC is a bluff, too. There's no way for someone who's not in front of the computer to know what's on there. So if I get a call like that, I'd just hang up.

I'd report the scam to Callercenter too, along with the scammer phone number so others are warned ahead.
