Just three - up at geosynchronous orbit, at a 120 degree spacing. Except the poles, everywhere on Earth would be line-of-sight for a satellite. He envisaged them being very large and staffed!
Particularly visionary since in 1945 there was no way of getting to space at all, let alone twenty-odd thousand miles up.

Interesting point, however the V2 rocket was already in use in 1944 and capable of reaching outer space altho' since it was used against cities its trajectory was usually no more than 60 miles altitude. As early as the 30's rockets were able to reach considerable altitudes and had der Fuhrer been as visionary as A.C.C Clarke rocket technology would have been bad news for us all instead of only bad news for some of us.

After WW2 German rocket scientists were pinched by the victors to continue their own space programmes.

My favourite inventor is Sir 'This Is for Everyone' Tim Berners Lee. Without whom none of us would be here today.

Noise cancelling speakers on Mobile phones. Mrs Jeez worked for a speaker company 15 (maybe 20) years ago who released a noise cancelling headphone. At the time I thought "wow that would work a treat on a mobile phone" and save having to put your finger in the other ear when out in a noisy environment. Fast forward 15 or so years and Apple release their noise cancelling speaker to a good deal of ceremony.

And Smart phones.

Around the same time I was using the phone to get my home internet, (huge cable strewn across the dining room floor to my PC) and wondered why we couldn't use the Mobile phone to connect to the internet and have some sort of browser actually on the phone.

Unappreciated Genius me.

and now for my next big thought...if it is now law for firms like Sky to make their content available for general distribution then what's stopping firms (like you and me) setting up a secure data centre and distributing their content ourselves...for less than them?

Back in the early 90s, a camping fridge powered by a solar PV panel - they weren't powerful enough then for this to be a goer, nowadays it may well be feasible. The beauty was that the warmer the weather, the more power needed, but the more power available.

At school (IIRC) I 'invented' in my head at least, something like the 'Good Grips' range of utensils - basically the need for cutlery/tools with big smooth chunky grips instead of annoying little ones you need to hold between the tips of your fingers, and often with sharp edges to dig into your hands.

I thought of a cheap product that could fit in the back windscreen of your car that would allow the driver to flash up a message to the car behind. My plan would be that drivers could use the device to apologise to other road users...

I have invented a method of summoning traffic while you are in the middle of nowhere on your bike. Best performed when you haven't seen a car for 20 minutes or so, all you do is hop off your bike, approach a hedge or wall, and take your todger out in order to have a wee. Immediately, as if from nowhere, cars will appear, probably containing people you know too.

I have invented a door bell that dials your mobile phone as well as dinging and donging. If you like you can tell the caller you aren't available and they must leave a message. Haven't made it yet, or patented it and some else probably has or else there is a snag I haven't thought of.

Yes, I have just missed a parcel and have to go to the depot..

In the late 60's I realized that a leaf blower would be cool. I would always blow grass clippings off the driveway with the mower and knew there had to be an even better way. I was too young and didn't have the resources to make anything, just knew there should be something like them for grass and leaves.

Not exactly a technology but a few years ago I thought it would be a good idea if people could donate stuff they didn't want to people who could use it. I started building a website to facilitate it and even registered a domain name. Never quite got it off the ground - and then Freecycle arrived...

I almost invented Shazam, the music detecting app a few years ago. Got a friend to write some code and did a lot of testing before shelving it to work on other research. Bugger....

I was interested in planes as a kid, and was constantly drawing orthogonal projections of aircraft. Once, I added a small engine and a fibreglass body below a hang glider to create the microlight.

Less happily, being fascinated by what, back then, were called RPVs, I anticipated the offensive use of drones for ground attack (and for aerial combat, as they could out-g any manned aircraft, but that side hasn't been picked up on), and for reconnaissance.

Water bed.

When we were at school, me and my pal Andrew (lived next door) decided that it would be comfy and we got a lilo and took it upstairs and filled it with a narrow tube and a funnel, with water from the bathroom tap.

Lilo air valves are not designed to keep water in and when Andrew & I sat on the 'water bed' the valve thing went and there was water all over the upstairs. My mother was not a happy person, my dad was incandescent with rage and Andrew was not allowed to play over for a week!!
