I blame Simon Cowel... teeth so white and perfect that they look more false than actual false teeth. I like natural things to look natural. The Queen Mother had perfect teeth.

This "White Teeth" phenomenon seems to have started in the good Ol' US of A, as seen on Friends, decades ago

I did think that, but I was unsure about the numbers. I remember at school for some reason we added H2O2 (no idea of the concentration) to animal blood, and got lots of red foam. Quite what the point of that experiment was I have long since forgotten.

(Edit. It's come to me. Peroxidase enzyme was the subject of the experiment)

"everyday" H2O2 is often labelled 10 volumes or 20 volumes; this being the multiple of the original volume liberated as oxygen when it breaks down. This is the stuff you might dab on a cut; albeit of questionable medical value. 20 vol is I think about 6%

I imagine correctly done dental work and "gentle" whitening can improve a smile though the idea doesn't appeal to me. Most people though seem to go for the equivalent of these dazzling car headlights.

We know an attractive woman in her 50s who had "corrective" work done in Turkey for £5000. At the time I thought why? You're good looking and have presumably been happy with your looks for +/- 55 years, so why?

At a local flower show/town festival this summer we stopped to listen to a female choir perhaps 50 strong. From around 30/40 yards away my only memory of the performance is the woman in the centre whose teeth shone out like a lighthouse Beacon. How could she want to be seen that way?

There was a very good, scary, report on BBC Northwest on this last night.

Same with male hair transplants. They look ridiculous and will almost certainly need constant maintenance over a lifetime. As will these silly teeth. Once you’ve had your teeth played with they need constant medical intervention.
Vanity should be one of the seven deadly sins.
I take a pride in my complete aversion to anything to do with cosmetics and the beauty industry.
It’s a reverse snobbery of sorts.

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
I'm lucky to have been born stunningly beautiful so I can afford to neglect my appearance in a manner that would cause a less blessed individual look like a scruffy mess. But in my case my beauty shines through.

I am mindful of my good fortune, and unlike @Beebo I don't condemn those less fortunate as sinners for aspiring to improve themselves. I don't see it as sinful, just a natural attempt to compensate for their unfortunate appearance.

I'm new to this debate, but I remember a character in a film saying she had corrected dentistry because she did not want to have British teeth. I understand that and sympathise with the wish. British teeth are often or mostly yellowed, crooked and down right unappealing. White teeth are so much more appetizing to the eyes. Yes, Americans' do go in for teeth straightening and whitening and I am so glad of it.
Personally, my teeth have always been naturally well set and the toothpaste I use keeps them white. So, to those who seem to think yellow teeth are de riguer, do everyone a favour and clean them and whiten them - or if not, please do not turn our stomachs at the view of your ghastly yellow, unwashed teeth, or failing that, refrain from ever smiling. All American vistors (and British ex pats) to British shores will thank you so very much.
