Tell me the Pros and Cons of making my own roof rack

Instinct says no but then having seen the quality of roof boxes and those stupid bike racks that clip onto hatchbacks I would say a made one would probably be better.

If the roof rails you have are the ones that are raised up a bit (some are flush with the car) then it would probably be fine to throw some big bags up there and just lash them between the rails with decent straps (the ones with the locking ties at the end).

I once got a free Paddy Hopkirk set of bars as the "universal" ones they sold for the previous car did not fit the new car, so they sent me a different "universal" set.

Chains look a bit slack.....

My uncle made a roof rack and a roof box for a Reliant Robin... He was an ex Navy fitter...... It made it to the end of the road..... Before it slid off the roof and and across the bonnet one f his rare failures...... I was in the car at time..... He then made a tow bar and trailer both out of angle iron which was better......

On a positive note he did give me a classic 1950's Viking frame........
