So a few nights ago my rear derailleur cable snapped, leaving me in top gear on the rear, although I'm still able to go into a higher gear via the front gears.

It's actually making me work a lot harder, I'm achieving higher average speeds, sweating more, legs are feeling it more. I'm climbing hills a lot better as I'm trying to get momentum before the hill and then I stand on the pegs and just power up, hardly dropping cadence where usually about a 1/3 the way up I'd be putting it into the first few gears and crawling up.

So a  to all the fixie guys here, it's brilliantly hard work! I'm thinking of not getting a new cable

If you had a screwdriver available you would have been able to use the limit screws to move the default gear to the middle of the block

Ah! young grasshopper, you are learning.

Technically you are riding singlespeed rather than fixed (Well not even SS as you have the front).

Some of use deride the term "fixie", we are not Hipsters.

That would be cheating though:bicycle:

Definitely! Only been at it for a few weeks.

Could it be classed as a dualspeed then?

Or you could shorten the chain and bypass the derailleur altogether (assuming you don't have vertical dropouts). This is how I dealt with a similar situation once upon a time. Similarly, it gave me a taste for fewer gears. Been riding mostly fixed for two years now.
