There is a mouthfull to start the day. The phasciitus was my main problem and the doc gave me Naproxen, then yesterday as I was going about my job a real deep pain just above my ankle seemed to grow from a niggle, went when I stood still, then got worse when I started walking again. It became nearly intolerable sometimes, so I took today off to go to my docs again and he signed me off for a week straight away, a severe bout of ankle tendonitus. Then said we will see what its like in a weeks time. Pleased though I am, sort of, to have the free time with my leg up, Im wondering if cycling will aggrevate it, as some of you know I have a new bike which Im really enjoying, and would hate to think its a no no for a week or two. It never crossed my mind to ask my doc at the time, any ideas anyone?

Just relax, watch the telly and clean/lube your bike.

Think yourself lucky is not a 'detached Achilles'. You would be out for six months.

You could do some crunches with your feet up on a chair, or some seated dumbell work to exercise your shoulders, triceps and biceps.

Watch what you eat while you are not riding.

Hi col,

I only ask this from painful personal experience, but are you happy that your doc has diagnosed this correctly? I only ask because I have persistent knee problems that are due (according to a specialist physio anyway) to a poorly tracking patella. My GP originally diagnosed this as tendonitis. Although some of the treatment was the same, including rest, it turns out I could have done more earlier if it had been diagnosed correctly. I don't think ankles are as complicated as knees though.

I'm not pointing the finger at my GP, after all they're not specialists in this king of thing, but I've got the impression that they use tendonitis as a 'catch-all' for possibly more treatable underlying causes.

Im pretty happy with his thoughts on it, he did a rather thourough feel and check on my foot and pain area, there was nothing else to make him think anything else, but as it happens I have a load of blood tests this afternoon from my origional time a couple of days ago about the phasciitus, with a couple thrown in. It could be linked with me compensating from that, and seems to all fit as the pain from that just started to aggravate a few days ago. And as there are no other symptoms like heat ect Im happy.
But thanks for pointing the possibility out.

I would still check the diagnosis.

I had a problem with my right foot which persisted for nearly eight months. One GP told me I had ruptured fat pads in my heel from running, another told me it was plantar fasciitis, I was referred to a Consultant who gave me excruciatingly painful steroid injections into the ligaments and was about to try surgery...

I then went to a physio who correctly diagnosed it as small muscle imbalance and gave me some exercises to do with a rubber band against a table leg. I was cured in a fortnight and have never had the problem since.

You both make good points, but as there is nothing invasive, and its just a few tablets and rest for the time being Ill let it ride for a week. Then if Im still getting the same problem which is severe pain, which feels deep inside about half way up between my heel and calf when walking , then goes almost straght away if I stand still, Ill get in to see him again.
Thanks again for the warnings.
