Is it permissible to stow a tent sideways across a rear rack or does touring etiquette mandate it must be packed in-line?

Possible trouble wi' latter as my saddlebag overhangs half the length of the rack. I have a bit of play on the rack which would allow me to lengthen it somewhat to allow in-line stowage but to use this would mean the top of the rack would be on a not insignificant incline, risking the panniers falling backwards.

The tent is about 50cm wide when packed and I reckon two full panniers and the rack would be about the same. Anyroad, if you folks deem it forbidden, I'll have to buy a pair of them front pannier thingys, and rack.

Whatever works best on your bike surely - not what anyone else thinks!

ours always goes across - no space for it anywhere else. Just go with what works for you and don't worry!

ours was in the red bag between the rackpack and the seat post (and in a waterproof container only because the fabric was wearing thin on a long tour with it rubbing against the rack supports - saved the tent fabric itself getting damaged).

Be a free-spirit and whichever you prefer, I've always had mine widthways....I'm sure the weight-weenie lycra brigade would say it increases drag though!

Widthwise, in front of the sleeping bag and thermarest. Seems the traditional way to accomplish this. I've been trying to work out packing for the H600 Cannondale, and the Planet Bike rear rack has a lot of reach to the monostay, so I'm thinking the tent bag will ride there, atop the struts. I'm going to lowriders in front with this tourer, so I won't have a full rise front rack, and the extra storage, with the new set-up.

Why bother with panniers when you have such a magnificent trailer?

Front panniers wont do you any harm, I find things more stable with front panniers. As for the tent, yep sideways does seem a bit odd, not in looks but for me it was just too 'wangy'....too much over lap for my liking. No matter how well you secure it, it will slip, one way or the other and that might be a recipe for disaster.
