it is just saying it works out how to avoid everything using a computer chip and some sensors

But my phone has computer chips and sensors. If I throw it at a tree, it won’t avoid it, unless my aim is off. How specifically does it work?

First rule, understand your audience. Jargon does not impress, and is just seen as gobbledegook. In plain english for Cyclechat audience, how does it avoid trees? Not how was it developed.

The LiDAR is be able to measure the distance to objects in real time. The single vision system will use algorithms to detect moving shapes, first detecting shapes, then by comparing frames. If a tree trunk shape is getting larger it is getting closer. It will be able combine the LIDAR depth info with the visual image frames.

It's likely AI has been used in developing the algorithms offline and I would assume some AI models are also being used onboard the drone but these will be proprietary, small lightweight fast models for shape sensing and trajectory prediction as opposed to Large Language Models (LLM). An obstacle avoidance system doesn't need to know the complete works of Dostoevsky!
