On the spot fines, eh. What about the fines for not filling your bins properly.
Let's face it, if they could, they would charge us for breathing air.

Don't pay these fines, they are not even lawful, just merely statutes ordered by a corrupt government and parliament.

So emigrate. Go find somewhere with no fines or taxes, and see how well you get on when you need a road to cycle on, or a hospital, or police or any of that.

Avoiding fines of any sort is, as others have pointed out, fairly easy. If you're too dim to do so, then maybe you need more of the schooling that also has to be paid for....

...Of course, by then, petrol will be £10 a litre, driving will be as socially unacceptable as pimping your wife, and cyclists will be the vast majority of traffic on our roads. Looking forward to a quieter, more local existence.

he does have point about police powers being trickled down to salivating councils with tongues hanging out in readiness to dress up any 'ol dumass in a uniform to hand out tickets for this and that

what was the question again? oh yeah what a good idea about actually seeing some police out and about

Hi_viz is personal choice. But if you get knocked down by an idiot, the idiot's solicitor will argue contributory negligence if you are wearing dark clothing.

Even if your statement about Hi-viz being largely invisible is true, Mr 70 year old QC ma lord knows carp all about cycling and will agree with idiot's solicitor because it seems like a logical and reasonable argument.

So I will stick with the tasteful dayglo

It's not. I don't know why people have this thing against hi viz, but a proper hi viz tabard (like those that motorway workers wear) stands out a mile in daylight. And at night, when the headlights catch the reflective strips.
Maybe I'm biased because I get them free from work.

Whilst I agree that hi-viz stands out, it also seems that everyone and his dog is wearing it these days and it becomes so commonplace that it has the opposite effect of what it was intended. In daylight there's a lot to be said for wearing a solid colour so that you will be silhouetted against the background of colours. (Having said that, a Metallica top is a slightly dubious choice!)

Assuming you mean specifically a dark colour (after all, a hi-vis top can be a solid colour too!), I'm not sure that holds. A dark solid colour top stands out against a solid background of bright colour perhaps but in a scene as mixed as a street, one body sized object isn't going to stand out against all the other varying body sized colours - Hi vis still does stand out more, because even if a lot of people are wearing it, it shows against tarmac, buildings, white vans etc.

It may be commonplace, but it still stands out. Now, whether anyone takes any notice of it, that's another thing. I work in hi-vis, alongside a bright yellow vehicle, often standing on the offside of it sorting recycling into the back, and most people give us plenty of room - there are still those who skim by at speed - it wouldn't matter if we were wearing hi-vis, or black, or stilts and stars and stripes top hats, they'd still be too lazy to slow down and turn their wheels a little bit to give us more room. Fortunately, we're all sensible and aware enough to look and listen and not step back unexpectedly....

Of course, it's easy to avoid such 'taxes' by not breaking the law, isn't it? Hence, I don't expect any increase in 'taxes' as I never do anything likely to attract the attention of an officer.

Plus, as BM points out, they don't just pocket the money, do they.

you obviously havent heard of thier plans to criminalise knitting???
