was reading threads and checked a few links to youtube about the door zone yesterday and it came to my rescue this very morning.

i've been aware of the need to give parked cars their space when travelling past but hadn't been giving them enough...

on the city section of my commute, down a busy residents only parking street, car pulls across the road and parks about 100 meters in front of me. he sees me, i see him. lifesaver from me, move to middle of road - thanks to cyclechat and links - hey presto, i get within about 4 feet of the car and he swings the door open while grabbing his stuff from the other seat without looking...i shake my head and smile to myself.

Didn't you kick the door shut?

I once encountered a woman who had parked her car in the same direction as I was travelling; she opened her door without looking, and half swivelled to get out of the car.
It was a complicated business extracting my front wheel from the impromptu parking slot provided!!

You did well. Glad to hear you avoided the twit.

I was lucky the only time I got doored. It was the passenger in a car which had parked on the 'wrong' side and the door closed on her leg

I got some paint on the end of my pedal as a souvenir.

it was one of those where you could see it coming, last week i may have assumed he'd not be so ignorant and been much closer than i was today and have the cuts/brusies/busted bones to show for it - i think that's the reason i didn't say anything and just shook my head and smiled at him though he probably deserved the old 'nescafe' sign language :hello:

Last night passing a school at emptying time. The road is a side road, cars parked on both sides. A driver travelling down the middle of the road at about 5 miles an hour. I started to overtake when he opened his drivers door, still moving. There was a reasonable amount of space to pass, but it took me by surprise. He then began to chat to a lady who was walking down the pavement. I guess his leccy window does not work.

I got doored some years back.
A passenger getting out of the rear door of a (illegal) minicab at one o'clock in the morning on a narrow street.
Result to the cab was I took the door clean off.
Damage to me was a minor chip in the paintwork

(Luckily I was driving 2.5 tonnes of VW transporter van at the time!)
