Its a long shot,
Cycling home last night (Monday 18:50ish 13/01/20014) I hit another new pothole just as as I came into Tickenham (North Somerset). After walking with the bike until I found somewhere more suitable to try and fix the puncture. This was by the Clifton Motors second hand car dealership. I was pleasantly suprised when another cyclist going my way stopped to make sure I was OK and if I needed any help. I have no idea who he was so this is a long shot to say thank you. After a miserable run of punctures I have been feeling pretty low about my commute and cycling, but that one act of community and thoughtfulness has reaffirmed my commitment.

You seem to run into pothole trouble a lot.

A few weeks ago on a horribly wet night, I stopped to help a roadie struggling with a puncture in a lonely back street. His pump wasn't working properly and he was knackered from his efforts so I gave him my mini-pump to try while I put on my head torch to let him see better. He was still getting nowhere and I took over, getting his tyre up to a decent pressure. I chatted away to him but I could hardly get a word out of him, to the point where I thought it both weird and comical. Anyway, he did say thanks and we went our separate ways.

I've been helped by other cyclists in the past and I try to do the same for others. On a regular commuting route it can be good way to have a better chance of getting assistance when it's your turn.

The potholes are unbelievable at present. Half my journey is on country roads with no lighting, so its difficult to spot them and with fast traffic, its difficult to take a better position in the road to avoid them.
It will get there, the one I mention above caused a double snake bite, a new one on me.

Would it be best to get yourself a thicker tyred mountain bike or such like? That would handle the potholes much better.

or maybe some armadillo's, they haven't let me down so to speak and I hit all sorts of pot holes etc. not cheap but worthwhile.

I would offer to help, but frankly I'd be more of a hindrance than a help

It's the thought that counts vickster! You can always hold the torch!

To James - are you in the habit of reporting your potholes? I reported a load down my local country lane - a tiny little link lane which a lot of people use - and the council rang me up and told me when to expect the fixers round, plus served "cut your hedge" notices on the adjoining landowners when I reported how the verges had disappeared. http://www.fillthathole.org.uk/ is what you want - you may already know about this so sorry if there's a grandmother/sucking eggs situation here.

They fixed the holes and got the hedges done within a month btw.

I saw you also posted this incident on the CTC site which I occasionally look at - very nice of you.

I also ask if anyone needs help or offer any kit I've got on me. No-one has ever said yes (I'm not scary really!) but I'd rather ask. There's been times in the past when I've needed help and it's made such a difference when someone offers.

i always ask a stranded cyclist if he\she needs a hand. last summer, i was out washing the cars, and a guy on a clapped out MTB stopped outside my neighbours house and started fettling .... his wheel had lost a few spokes and wasn't rideable.
I popped his bike in the car and dropped him home (4 miles away), he offered me some money, but i refused.
what goes around comes around, and i'm sure i will need a hand one day

Ganymede,
Thanks. I had not come across that site before, I will be reporting these before you know it. Too many to count at the moment. Did tweet the local council, but its amazing how lost your post gets very quickly.
