I think that if my rear light failed i would cycle on the pavement if it was quiet, Then maybe jump back on the road if there was no other traffic about. Rear red reflectors on the bike could pass as lights as a last resort and reflectors on your shoes also help.

Problem is it's very hard to know that your back light has failed. I can't see mine when I'm riding so I'd rely on someone telling me.

I always use two though.

If you could only have one light, either front or rear and had to cycle, which would you choose?

I'm a rear kind of guy

If I gave a poundshop light to every unlit bike I come across I would need panniers full of them.

I generally have 2 each end I might lend one to a mate whos light failed but the stealth ninjas can take there own chances.

By glancing under my arm i can see the red reflection of my rear light on my rear mudguard. If i'm riding a bike without mudguards i cup my left hand around the light to see if there's a reflection. The light i have is quite powerful so it tends to reflect back off reflective road signs, so i can check this way as well.

Funny you should mention that TH, last night I was out and got passed by a rider whose rear light was out so I put in an effort, caught him and sat behind him for the last few miles. When he clocked me and looked over his shoulder I pointed at his unlit light and told him: "Just protecting you from the traffic Mate!" For some reason he didn't thank me for my selfless act; in fact I swear he rode a bit faster.

Well he should have, good on you for doing it all the same
