I had made 4 thank you cards to send to folk who posted me a present but currently been pole-axed by the gastric flu bug so they have remained unwritten so far. But I will do them soon! I normally do this each year but I never get any back!

I've had two, one from my sister, and one from Mum (who rang me to check whether it was me or sis who gave her some chocolates).

I need to write one, I'll probably do an email though.

I remember as a kid, it was such a chore - you get presents from more people as a kid, and you try to make each letter different, when all you can say is "thank you for the thing, I also got...."

We made the kids write/draw thank you cards (they're 5 and 3) under threat we'd return the presents if they didn't. I think it's important.

The only one i can remember getting was from my company in very unfortunate and sad circumstances.
A guy collapsed at work and i took over giving CPR to him until the amulance arrived. Ironically i wasnt a first aider, but they were 'hesitant' and unsure. I'd done the courses years before so they seemed more than happy for me to take over once i saw his lips were turning blue. The poor guy passed away some days later (brain bleed)...i got a thankyou letter a while after for my efforts.

I think it is - they can rebel when they are grown up, but a little enforced politeness is good for them as kids.

I was very pleased that this year nephew Oli said thankyou for all his presents, only being prompted a few times. Not bad for 3. Max, while unable to talk yet, did his bit by gumming all of his stuff to death.

I usually get one from a friend's 9 yr old; no doubt encouraged shall we say, by her Mum. Yet to receive it this year but time yet.

Though I hated doing it as a child I enjoy receiving her letter.

It's polite, but in certain circles it's become as much a matter of pride for (often slightly paranoid) mums rather than genuine thanks from the kids. I know one (rather uptight) mum who gets her kids to send thank you for the thank you letter' letters... and I'm not kidding.

^ when I emailed cateye for some instructions for a computer I got a thankyou email for my thankyou email.
I put a stop to it as it had to end somewhere.

I made mine last night but will only be smug when I've written and posted them. I've got out of the habit of sending christmas cards so these are Happy New Year ones too.

Do thankyou emails count?

I got a couple for organising the Anglo-German Club Christmas party. Appreciation of one's efforts really does generate a nice, warm feeling.

I send thankyou letters to my older relatives who still send me gifts, as they appreciate it. Not the ones I know very well though, as I'll say it in person.

I got a thank you card from my granddaughter yesterday. Mind you the handwriting looks very much like her mum's, which is forgiveable because the wee thing's barely 4 months old.

When I left my previous job I got a thankyou letter from the boss's boss out of the blue. It was handwritten and very flattering. I still have it somewhere.

Are we counting emails? I've emailed thankyous to the planning department for moving a dangerous cycle lane entrance at (I'd like to think) my suggestion and got a thankyou back.

I sent a thankyou to tv licencing for writing to tell me I was eligible for a free license by virtue of age, but pointing out in my reply (as I was only 40-something at the time) that I'd hang on for a few decades before taking them up on it.
