Oh, drawing attention to a mistake most definitely does have an education effect. The drivers might bitch and moan at the time, but afterwards they will think a little, and they will be less keen to overtake impatiently and close when the last time they did this to the cyclist all around saw their mistake. Some won't change, sure, but most people will alter their behaviour a little.
Do you really think so?

Let me offer an example.

Say someone posted a video which showed a really crappy overtake, one which was without question illegal and dangerous and showed a driver who had a complete disregard for the life of a cyclist and a complete lack of consideration for other road users.

(You might guess where I'm going with this one)

Now, say that one little part of that video was, subjectively, criticised. Do you think that the any "education" which was intended by that criticism was guaranteed success? Do you think that the person criticised thought a little about the feedback?

Personally, I don't think that has happened and that is with the opportunity to explain my comments. The chance that the driver of that ML has considered their actions as a result of the horn blasts is, IMO, negligible.

As an aside, I made no reference to the driving standards which were so obviously shocking that I didn't see much I could add. I would not try to "equate the use of a horn in anger with the endangering of someone's life via the manipulation of a ton of metal in a dangerous fashion". Although, Tinuts, I think the ML's kerb weight is way over 2 tonnes.

Here's a great example of a following driver making an exemplary overtake after a little feedback for the driver in front. Check out the final car, there's no way that overtake would have been that excellent if I hadn't edumacated the WVM driver.

Same goes for regular drivers on my commute - I came across one today that was too close the other week, got a toot and a pushing out motion, and he overtook just fine today. Don't give me bollocks about drivers not learning from feedback like this.

In my case, i didn't push my hand out to link with my horn that she should wait and i didn't appreciate her trying. But i have done in the past, and as mikey said, you see some regular drivers and there driving does improve.

Know that stretch of road pretty well - had a few close calls on that bridge myself. Seems to attract impatient idiots

Cheers,
Daniel.
