That's right, I'm retiring the cycle shoes and the bike, the whole lot! For two weeks whilst I go away to Bulgaria

I did a quick look into biking over there, and apparently it's not great, so I guess I'll have to spend my days relaxing and getting pissed

Fly tomorrow at 8pm, although, we leave home at 8am as the missus wants to do shopping before hand in Manchester... It's not like this weekend I've been up at 4am both days for 12hour shifts and normally I rest for the entire length of Monday....

I just spent a week in Amsterdam and did the most cycling I have done in months. Work commitments have eaten away all my free time and energy, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed cycling. Have a lovely holiday.

We stayed at Golden Sands, great hotel, 4☆ 3 pools, hairdressers, doctor/pharmacy on site, lovely hotel.

It had previously & unfortunately been trashed by Liverpool fans just before the European Cup Final where Michael Sheilds had been arrested.

It had been completely fixed by the time we went.

Sunny Beach (I have never been) is said to be the Bulgarian equivalent of Magaluf.

At night things could get a little seedy, I was propositioned twice by prostitutes while walking down the hill to the beach bars & through the main bars & restaurants area.

Miss Centurion had been separated slightly from me due to heavy footfall but overheard once & towered over the 5ft hooker, Swmbo didn't need to speak as the little Bulgarian was quickly very apologetic.

The flagons of lager were around 55p to 90p at the time we went, depending on the venue, no idea what they are now.

All the toilets are spotlessly clean as they have attendant ladies on the door, who like to be tipped.

We didn't get to go to the old towns & districts due to other halfs lack of adventure but I believe there are some gorgeous old buildings, churches & the like & the food & drink away from resorts is very good & very cheap.

The biggest surprise was the coach transfer, through Varna, which can only be described as Salford at War with long washing lines on pulleys between blocks of flats & what looks like rendering after machine gun & tank fire has hit.

The 'border' barrier to the resort is also manned by armed police.

Bulgaria as a country it has to be remembered is a developing nation with remnants of Russian rule still to be seen & has a Mafia of it's own.

Still it's a great place to visit if you take care, as you would in any unknown land.

I don't see why it has to be.

Sure it's a developing nation, still playing catch up but I am sure in years to come this will largely be overcome.

It is what it currently is, but has interest if you venture out a little.
It is also a clean & friendly place if you don't, although I would reserve trust, especially where money or any personal details are concerned.

While it would be nice to visit Bali or Ayres Rock or maybe trek across the Himalayas, we are all restricted (or not) by time, money, family commitments or just a lack of need to do these things.

Sure it's a developing nation, still playing catch up but I am sure in years to come this will largely be overcome.I don't see why it has to be.

Nothing to do with Bulgaria per se, more that it's cheap to get to and all-inclusive resorts are noted for the high proportion of punters whose idea of a holiday is to spend all their time in/by the pool getting slaughtered on the cheap booze supplied.

True, some will on any package holiday & it can be disappointing if you end up in the same hotel as White Dee & her mates, I don't disagree in that respect.

To avoid those types entirely though I suggests a large budget &/or more remote, less populated locations are required, again linked to budget & time, family etc.

I have never afforded the money or time to visit expensive destinations or have extended travel, everything is determined by circumstances.

I have however had perfectly good & reasonably quiet holidays in popular destinations like Greece, Bulgaria & the Canaries.

Still, I do enjoy the tales of those more travelled & I am admittedly slightly envious of their freedom to travel to far flung & interesting corners of the globe.

Just gone through airport security.... Yes it's sunny beach lol... As said earlier it's kind of like a magaluf destination... But we're not bothered....we normally splash out in holidays, but next year is wedding and honey money so it was a bit of a budgeted one this year.

We're staying at Laguna Park hotel.... How ever it turns out, it will be an experience .

I think avoiding all-inclusive reports is the main thing.

Still, I do enjoy the tales of those more travelled & I am admittedly slightly envious of their freedom to travel to far flung & interesting corners of the globe.

I've been very fortunate in that I used to do a lot of business travel, which took me to a lot of places I'd never otherwise have visited. Granted my free time in each place typically ranged from a couple of hours to a day tops, it did at least provide a taster - plus some FF miles to facilitate return visits to the ones that appealed. I do a lot less these days. As for leisure trips, not having kids pays for a lot of fun stuff. :-)
