Cycling in yesterday, gear changes on the MTB started getting a bit sloppy.... hmm....

300 yards of work, bang..... no gears....mech dropped to the 13 sprocket, I changed to the 36 middle ring.... limped into work....

Fortunately ? the gear cable had snapped. Replaced it that afternoon after vivsting EBC for parts...

The lucky bit...... I'd been up in the remote hills off road the day before, middle of no-where doing some exploring - It would have been a long way home...

PS gear changes are nice and sweet now....should have changed the cables ages ago

If you're going to break down, that's definitely the way to do it!

Re sweetening your changing - I'm always amazed at the effect when I just flip the bike over and run a little oil where the cables go round the bottom bracket. Takes seconds, costs nothing, always makes quite a difference.

Mine have gone sloppy (despite cleaning and lubricating the moving parts). The bike is due in for a full service soon, but I'm having to wait for my wheels to come in first as they're gonna get it all tweaked in one go.

How long did your cables last? Mine tend to last about 3 years here and then the local muck on the roads mess with them.

Erm....had the cables on some time, but the bike was laid up not used much until the last two years, and then used daily...

If the change isn't great, then stick on new ones - I tend to lube and clean the cables, just that they were a little ancient.... replaced the brake cables a few months back.....

My cables snapped inside the STI shifter which is well oiled..... new cables before it goes terminal............ - not at the 'nodule' but about 5mm away from it.... pig of a job to fish it out of MTB shifters....... so be warned.....even us 'experts' push it too far some times......
