I am using my Giant Fathom Mtb on a regular basis and keep it cleaned and oiled.

I rode it for 30km on Saturday with no issues at all and parked it up as usual.

I got on it at 4.30am today to ride to work and tried to pedal. My legs went round and nothing happened. At that time of the day it takes a second or two for the brain to register something is not quite right.

I took it back to the shed to find the freehub isnt catching.

I will clean it out when I get home and re oil it. But its odd that I got no indication ag all the last time I rode it.

That's happened to me a few times. Once on my home commute, with about 12 miles still to go. I used a leather toe strap and weaved it round the big sprockets and spokes and turned it into a fixed gear. Very gently pedalling I just got home before it snapped. Others have used zip ties to do the same.

It'll be the pawls, I reckon.
