You'd be hard pressed to beat one of the Boardman road or CX bikes.

Good choice. They ride well and a CX with discs is probably the best ever all-round bike; fit skinny 23mm tyres and it's a fast road bike, 32mm tyres and mudguards make it a good winter bike and tourer and knobblies make it pretty good off road. When the first affordable hydraulic disc brakes hit the market you can sell those lumpy old BB7s and get some nice minimal little hydraulics.

I'm still rather taken with my Cannondale CAAD8, great frame with load of upgrade potential. RIdes really nicely and the geometry suits me .

Just fallen in love with a 2012 Trek Lexa SLX. No good reason why, other than, because ... and I saw one at just under £1k. Not that I can afford it
