The Best Type Of Silly Commuter Racing

I rarely ever get excited about beating people on my commue. However there is now a chink in my armour. I was passed by a guy in his 50's going uphill on an electric powered mountain bike whilst i was daydreaming. I got out of the saddle to keep up and chat to him about the bike and range per charge. He annoyed me a little by saying he liked to burn off youngsters like me. ( in my 40's) What possessed me to say "keep up if you want to" is beyond me. I spent the next 5 miles gently uphill at near 20mph to just keep ahead. Luckily I went a different way after that and nearly puked. Pride does come before a fall. no more SCR for me. I just enjoy my ride home.

I used to count the cyclists I pass but I dont bother now. Much more fun to cycle with my mate then burn him off near the end and freewheeling while he catches up!!! Lol. Hes on a custom road bike (built to his specs) and im on my hybrid! Lol

Had a rare incident of SCR myself last night.

To the chap on the fancy looking road bike with the large rucksack - I apologise if the fact I was yawning with my hands off the bars at the point I overtook you, just before I set off the 30mph Slow Down sign, looked like I was taking the piss - but I assure you I wasn't. Maybe the big backpack was slowing you down, or maybe I'm just faster than you, but I wasn't after a race.

Jumping a red light on a pedestrian crossing while I'm stopped at it means you LOSE anyway.

had a wee laugh last nite stopped at the lights ,,a kinda fat guy with denims and leather jacket went through the junction on a ratty old mtb (im in bib longs ,helmet ,,glasses on my road bike ,,i could see him eyeing me up lol,,i pulled out ,,caught him up and passed him (btw wasnt trying at all )so i stopped at the red light and was aware of him approaching ,,the lights went red and he was right behind me ,,he was obv giving it some and trying to pass ,i was going quite slow hoping he would pass cos he was right on my tail and tbh he was too close for comfort(could hear him panting and the bike creaking )anyway when i stopped further up at the next set of lights ,he ran the red ,,bumped up the kerb and turned off ,,when he passed me he said "i expected you to b faster "hahahahah ,,how i laughed

A few weeks ago, me and a friend were cycling up a fairly large and steep hill. My friend was on a MTB, and I was on my road bike having to cycle slowly for him.

About halfway up the hill, we were overtaken by another cyclist wearing full lycra, on an expensive road bike, who was out of the saddle, powering his way up the hill, panting like a dog.

I decided to have some fun, so I powered away from my friend and overtook the roady. I guess he didn't like being overtaken by someone on a vintage 10 speed, wearing civvies - as from then on a Silly Commuter Race took place for the next mile or two up the hill averaging around 18 to 20 mph. We were very evenly matched, and overtook each other a few times over the period of the race.

At the top of the hill we exchanged greetings, and I stopped to allow my friend to catch up who we had left well and truly in the dust!

Great fun!

Seriously? 20mph for two miles up a steep hill? Well done
I would seriously struggle to do that on the flat!

last week on my way to work, pulling up to a left-only turn, you turn left there, then head down the road and take a right which joins the traffic going back the other way (the way I need to go).
I dunno if he was trying to race, but as i checked over my shoulder at the left-only i see a guy storming up the road behind, cuts over the oncoming lane, mounts pavement, continues down path going to my right for a hundred yards or so, before re-joining the road at a red pelican crossing. Bascally he didn't wanna follow the rules of the road and take the left turn, only to have to double back on himself.
I however DID stick to the road and still sailed passed him just a wee way on up the road lol

It probably slowed down a bit towards the end, and maybe it was closer to the one mile mark, but I know when I over took him I was in a sprint at around 18 to 20 mph ish, and I was dead pleased with myself!

I think I was just raring to put down the power after following my friend slowly up the hill for so long, so I put it all down in a quick sprint.
