The mech cage should sit 2-3mm above the large sprocket. Adjusting the High and low on fronts is relatively simple - you just want it so low (i.e. small chainring) is enough to stop chain rattle on the largest rear sprocket, and the same with the high (big chainring) - stops rattle on the smallest sprocket. Workshop (home) settings you first need to ensure it shifts without dropping the chain.

Then road test it and take a suitable screwdriver with you to make fine adjustments.

ROAD TEST AFTER YOU HAVE FITTED THE BRAKE CABLES !

Last night and your comments have lit a light-bulb over my head

I struggle so much with front mechs as I always always forget the limit screws

I need to double check the cable goes the correct way into the front mech tho

But as my brake cable still isn't here - I'm taking the night off fettling and will resume tomorrow evening
