went to chelford car boot sale today with the family with a view to checking out if any old classic lightweights were being flogged for peanuts by unsuspecting sellers, only it was cancelled due to a boggy field. bugger.

anyway, we decided to head on down to hack green secret bunker, which was really interesting, although explaining the cold war to the kids was a tall order (everyone thought there would be a nuclear war but then there wasn't) and i think i'll go again without them to experience it properly.

they actually have the machine the russians used that needed two keys to launch a strike against the uk, and the coding machine used by thatcher to give the order to sink the belgrano.

anyway, anyone else got a decent bike/frame for peanuts for a car boot, or is it a waste of time?

Usual story - the bunker is 2 miles down the road and I haven't bothered to visit!

Got my Raleigh Clubman (Reynolds 531) for £25 from Bottesford carboot.
£25 ?....it was an 'ok' price....the rest of the bike was poor, wheels were 27 inch, but the guy knew what 531 meant so he wouldnt move on the price.

Spent £230 ish on it upgrading it to 8 speed and its my faithful winter commuter now...solid as a rock.

99% of any other racers ive seen were the usual rubbish to be honest.

Thanks Alecs. Took the kids to Hack Green today, just got back. Real success, though they did spend a fair amount of time finding the spy mice. I filled them in on the cold war and the Falklands too after we saw the low frequency transmitter. Crackle1 was most interested in the Russian stuff as he's doing Russian in school and was extremely happy after buying himself a Russian hat. A real success.

A friend of mine went on a tour round the Canadian national bunker, including the storeroom they had earmarked for the Canadian gold reserve. He said the whole thing was painted a 'cheerful' yellow, to try and keep morale up.;)

Also, apparently, the broadcasting company got their top newsreader to record a "this is the air attack warning, hide under your stairs" type message, just in case. But to get just the right tone in his voice, they didn't tell him it wasn't for real.
