The chalk giant in the hillside has apparently suffered from the climate.
There are now, reportedly, 300 people working to restore his erhh bits.
Its part of history but should they just allow nature to take its course. Is it a load of b*llocks or should they erect it ?

Just been on the news!

Here in a Shoreham (Kent), we have small giant cross carved into the chalk. Not quite as old, dating as a tribute to soldiers lost in the first world war ......

I know it well. As small crosses go it is indeed a giant. But compared with most gigantic crosses, it's quite small.

Not too far from Cerne are the Westbury White Horse, the Fovant military badges and the Osmington White Horse.
The Osmington one is interesting - it depicts King George III riding his horse, but away from Weymouth, which was a favourite place of his. However as he was depicted riding away, he took it as an insult and never returned to Weymouth.
Carvings on chalk hillsides are quite common.

this ain't the the first or the last time it will be "re-chalked". I suggest that if it hadn't been regularly re-chalked then us modern humans woudn't know anything about it.

It's all a mighty cock-up isn't it! 300 people required? Can't be that hard.

One of the best Marathons! A tad lumpy with all the hills, naked farmers in tin baths, alcohol at some checkpoints, a " love station " with music ( and an optional hug to keep you going ). The medal was exceptional with the todger on a pivot so you could use it as a sort of " fidget spinner "
The commemoration T shirt was fluorescent pink with the Cerne Giant on the front 😁

I've just had to google it. it's estimated to be around 1000 years old, so probably qualifies as something of historical significance so probably should have money spent on it if you believe in maintaining historic relics
