The coating on the inside of Mavic rims

I was checking my rims to see if they had any rims tapes on. Certainly none that I recognised. There is what feels like a coating of some sort.

Can anyone explain any details etc.

It's probably the factory-appointed rim tape. It's a thin, often clear or colored, protective strip applied to the rim's inner surface where the tire bead sits. Its main job is to protect the tube from being punctured by the spoke holes and to help create an airtight seal. If it feels smooth and intact, it's doing its job. You only need to worry if it's cracked, peeling, or missing.
