Always wondered how you would actually make a citizens arrest:eek:

Just found this

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4159/is_20041024/ai_n12762773

Important part

'But before you start thinking about these points, it's important to remember that a citizen's arrest can only be carried out if you've seen the crime yourself: you can't do it on someone else's behalf. Also, you can only do it if an infraction or criminal activity is taking place which, upon first conviction, would carry a sentence of five years incarceration. You can't make a citizen's arrest for littering - nuisance as that may be'

How are you supposed to know that - you'd have to be a judge! And five years? You'd have to be intercepting a murderer I reckon (and not someone who'd just flatteden someone with a car, they only get a fine and slapped wrist)

No it wasn't Will. It was an older bloke with a hi-viz vest and one of those rigid Ortlieb office things fixed to his rack.

Sounds like the sort of person it might just have been worth having a word with - he might just think it over and change (he might even be one of those who took up commuting having not cycled since he was a kid, and really doesn't know the rules).

The average chav on an MTB wouldn't be worth the breath.

Nice tactic anyway. Best way to handle it. I always plan (trouble is, catching them - if they never stop at any lights, and I do) to say something like "That didn't get you very far, did it?", but that's a bit sneering and probably would put their back up.

If you weren't such a plank and read the post properly you'll see that I did none of those things.

You had a go at him for jumping a red light, having decided that his own assessment that it was perfectly safe wasn't good enough for you so you launched into an invective on the principles of road safety at him.

I'll remember that when a car does it then... s'okay as long as it's safe for them (sod any pedestrians / cyclists etc.).

I didn't say it was ok, just that it's HIS decision, not anyone else's.

True, but if everyone turns a blind eye to everyone else doing it then surely everyone will (at some point) start doing it as it has become acceptable... won't they?

No, most people turn a blind eye to it. It's the police's job to do policing, surprisingly enough - hence the name. Imagine if it went the other way - everyone tried to police any minor misdemeanours they see whenever they can - it would be chaos! Everyone would be applying their own interpretation of justice and their own judgement on guilt, and a whole range of countless different punishments being doled out from the hip left right and centre.

No I didn't. Read it again. Plum.

You can't deny, largely on account of the fact that you've admitted it and are now trying to backpedal, that you saw someone jump a red light, became incensed, and immediately took off pedalling furiously after him ranting. You then thought you'd been a bit angry so decided to post a thread claiming you'd took a 'considered approach' to justify it. And how else did you manage to keep/catch up with him if you didn't jump the red light and he did?

Also you'll be pleased to know that I now ALWAYS stop at red lights, but I'm not sure I should bother if that's yourattitude.

Mr Paul said " I thought I'd start a conversation".
If starting a conversation was the same as having a go at some one then I think there would be a lot more flattened noses and cauliflower ears to be seen around.:girl:

Bonj - have you relented on mudguards too ?

I still don't see why you need them to keep yourself clean, as I never got dirty without them, but I have them on one of my bikes 'cos i now do audaxes, the other one as a trial to see if it keeps the bike itself any cleaner. if not, they'll come off again.

Now you're just making stuff up, as far as I can see...
