@Drago I make no appologies for not being anti car.

I would have more issues with conatiner ships around the world or frivilous holidays jetting off to every end of the globe. If you are so concerned with air pollution and the use of natural rescources then focus your attention on shipping or aviation

Over the life of the car, I have only ever had to pay for tyres, MOT, and oil. Probably £220 ish per year factoring in tyre life. £5k on the car over 5 years and I intend to keep it till it dies. So maintenance costs have been around 6k over 5 years and 92k miles. So around 7p per mile in tyres and maintenance.
So wiper blades, spark plugs, filters and all the other shoot for free, never have it serviced and expect nothing to break on it until it dies? I humbly suggest that's highly unusual and exceptionally lucky.

We stayed in a travelodge next to a park and ride. That we couldn't actually get a bus to, as it was a Sunday and there were no buses running.
See earlier about the screwed-up transport market. There is actually still one bus an hour on Sundays (Turquoise Line), but it stops on the road outside rather than visting the Park and Ride stop. You should have taken your bikes, as Thickthorn is on the blue pedalway and Norwich generally is slightly above-average for cycling. ;) (Although crossing the Thickthorn roundabout itself is a clusterfark - edited to add: basically because it's Highways England in charge, rather than Norfolk, and was last redesigned while HA/HE were still in full-on all-bow-before-King-car mode.)

Assuming I understand the two together deal, it would have still been £150 for the 2 of us to get the train, and take more time doing so.
Return I think so, about that, yes, and it only takes more clock time, not more time actually driving. I also notice that my sat nav estimates Norwich-Manchester at 4h50 by any of three routes, plus two rest stops and traffic delays, whereas you claimed to do it in 4, which seems pretty lucky.

Still on original plugs, had 2 sets of blades I suppose at £60 in total. Filter is factored in to the servicing cost too. Don't bother with cabin and pollen filters. And I do the work myself

I did notice the roads appear more cycle friendly than Manchester!

4 on the way down on Sunday, just over 5 on the way back up Monday

I don't want a car for that long nor do I want the debt for that long. Nor do I want a second hand car that is on the edge of, or out of warranty..

Warranty isnt everything. A second had car picked right can run a long way without any serious maintanance. Maybe I have a skewed view having worked in the car trade for 20 years but new cars aren't something for me.

If the government wants to cut down car usage, they need to fix our public transport. A system that is affordable, and is suitable to modern working hours, and not end at 10 to 11pm.

Governments are fixing public transport. Look at your own local light railway:

Unfortunately no plans at the moment to go due north through Rossendale towards the towns of Ramsbottom, Accrington, Helmshore, Haslingden etc even though lines already exist, owned by ELR.

Simple. Car ownership = Freedom to go as you please. And we pay through the nose for the privilege.

That's not true and has never been true. Which is a very good thing.
 
With a car you can go (almost) where you please. You cannot go as you please. And you cannot go anywhere if that privilege is taken away.

How is it not true? I can get in my car at anytime of the day and night and go where I please.
You are licensed to drive on prescribed routes, in accordance with prescribed rules and regulations. You cannot "go as you please" for good reason.
