Now that you mention it, I haven't seen many 7-year-old, rich, green people commuting.
No, workers are all ages between 17 and 70, Male, Female, Black, White, Asian, Chines, Gay, Straight, Fat, Thin, Rich, poor etc etc.
My point is that most cyclists tend to be white, middle class, male and a bit eccentric, look at most of us on here !
I can see why more women dont cycle, its not good for hair and makeup, dropping kids of, wearing skirts or safety.
You get cyclists like Students who do it due to the nature of where they study and not being able to afford a car.
But I think certain sections of society dont cycle as it may look to others like they do it because they cant afford a car and that is not an image they want to portray, wheras your average middle class punter isn't bothered, its like when you see less well off people dripping in Gold. Its not just down to money as I know people much better off than me that have a more Blue Collar working class outlook than I do, I am nothing special I hasten to add, not better, not worse, just different.
The car can be/is a status symbol, mobile Ego and sometimes a personality substitute and some feel lost and impotent without it.
Someone turned up at the kids school today in a big pick up called a "Raging Bull", all over the side, logos on the seats, nice enough vehicle, quite practical but a bit of a statement !
