Ummmm...this is a joke, right? Or, am I just slow? I mean, WHY would a person be commuting? Wouldn't it be to WORK? Aren't "most" workers "MIDDLE CLASS, WHITE, and BETWEEN 25 and 50?"

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen many 7-year-old, rich, green people commuting.

No, workers are all ages between 17 and 70, Male, Female, Black, White, Asian, Chines, Gay, Straight, Fat, Thin, Rich, poor etc etc.

My point is that most cyclists tend to be white, middle class, male and a bit eccentric, look at most of us on here !

I can see why more women dont cycle, its not good for hair and makeup, dropping kids of, wearing skirts or safety.

You get cyclists like Students who do it due to the nature of where they study and not being able to afford a car.

But I think certain sections of society dont cycle as it may look to others like they do it because they cant afford a car and that is not an image they want to portray, wheras your average middle class punter isn't bothered, its like when you see less well off people dripping in Gold. Its not just down to money as I know people much better off than me that have a more Blue Collar working class outlook than I do, I am nothing special I hasten to add, not better, not worse, just different.

The car can be/is a status symbol, mobile Ego and sometimes a personality substitute and some feel lost and impotent without it.

Someone turned up at the kids school today in a big pick up called a "Raging Bull", all over the side, logos on the seats, nice enough vehicle, quite practical but a bit of a statement !

Ok, is it me or do most cyclists, commuter ones especially seem to be middle class white persons between 25 and 50 ?

Same with Roadies, Tourers usually older, white and beardy.

I regularly see cyclist of both sexes and all ages, so I think your statement say more about you, than the reality on the roads where I live...

I'm not male, do drop kids off at school then carry on my commute. I don't care about my hair and make up as I'm saving money, getting fitter and saving the planet as I do it so that makes me great! Perhaps a little eccentric though.

I think if you are male you are less likely to be doing the school run therefore leaving slightly earlier which would bias the sample. I see several dad's do the drop the kids to school by bike - one of them gives his son a backie all the way but the males would be in the minority. Similarly the women are more likely to be in part time work - I work school hours so that I can do the school run (by bike), so that they won't be out so much at 5pm either.

Says more about me ?

In what way ?

I am just hoping to see more cyclists of all types I am a bit lonely out here in Cheshire ! saw loads out over the last few days due to the weather, with a bit more variety, a whole family including little ones holding up the traffic, was great, I was in my car and went past very very slowly and the mum gave me a wave, was nice to see that the other drivers seemed quite happy to wait as well.

in this neck of the woods, my cycle commute route, at the time that i travel (Dunfermline to Edinburgh) is 30-45 ish, all male, with an older and increased female contingent when one nears town.

Almost all white, but i wouldn't like to comment on their bank balances or school tie affiliations.

You were doing well until you trotted out the old fallacy of "saving the planet"...

I thought there were hardly any cycle commuters round where I live. One morning I left for work later than usual and took the bus instead of cycling (this is rare- the only reason I did that is because my bike was left at work as we'd all been evacuated the previous day due to a fire). There were loads of people cycling through town, a pretty varied bunch too.

You left your bike to burn!!!!!
Priorities man, priorities!!!!

Terrible I know. In my defence there were flaming aerosol cans raining down onto the carpark (the fire was at a recycling depot next door). I took a look outside then went the other way. Bike was unharmed.

Why so grumpy Mr Creosote? Cycling is better for the planet than driving short distances in a car and I'm showing my kids there are other ways to travel. You were doing well reading the posts sad you had to spoil it by trotting out downers on other peoples views.
