The damage a little carrier bag can do!

On tonight's commute home I had the misfortune of getting a carrier bag caught on the rear derailleur, cue loads of crunching, and an almost clipless moment. The tiny little bag managed to rip the derailleur of and bend the jockey wheel cage to oblivion bu**ger!

Not only have I just paid £150 for a strip down service with new hub bearings, chain, cables and bar tape I now have to get a new rear derailleur

I have had the Tiagra 4600 10 speed, would the 105 be compatible if I can't get a replacement Tiagra?

Just got back from LBS about £100 for Shimano 105 derailleur, cage and fitting. Good thing was the bloke in the shop talked me out of getting Ultegra, saying I wont notice much difference. It wont be ready till Tuesday at the earliest because the have to order the cage.

Sympathy. As soon as I read the subject I thought "rear derailleur". I've had a similar, though luckily not catastrophic incident a few months ago. Yesterday when a bag blew under me so I had to ride across it, I checked in my mirror to make sure it was still on the road after I passed.

I had a similar incident a few years ago. Tore the derailleur right off etc. . my new derailleur was only £17.50.

You should replace these yourself. It's an easy job...

Having always done all my own work on my bikes, this price shocks me!

A new 105 rear derailleur can be bought for only £35 to £40 online... It really does pay to do repair jobs yourself.

Go on youtube and learn you can learn it all on there.just get all the new parts and go one step at a time. Take photos first of chain routing and anything else you think you won't remember, if you have a Derailleur hanger you might need to change that as they bend I have bent it on my mtb a couple of times.

There are loads more if this is not any good

My Rohloff tensioner was destroyed by a pair of large Sloggi Knickers!

Why they were lying in the middle of the road is probably a matter for conjecture, but if you think that removing a plastic bag is difficult, I can assure you that Sloggi Knickers are very robust!
